Even with the modern tools of manufacturing, all parts have a tolerance or acceptable limit of size variation.

There are tight barrels and loose barrels, both called a ".XX" caliber (fill in your 45, 50, 54 or whatever).

That's one of the many reasons that explains why someone will ask others for a good load and when it is given they may find it doesn't work well in their gun.

I agree. That why I thought Roundballs post to me was a bit over the top, but i'm trying to be nice. :wink:

Don't know about cons using a felt wad but in all my rifles the pros are a thinner patch which equals easier loading,no burnt through patches and better standard deviations on velocity...use them on my 40 cal flinter and all my cappers :grin:

PETE.In Round balls defence, I OWN BOTH a Hawken and a Renegade in the same calibres and the Renegade is a tighter fit.(I believe Round Ball owns all Hawkens) I beleave they are not as tight . AS ZONIE explaned. Walt

In Round balls defence
Thanks but its not necessary...just a simple reading & comprehension problem.

My statement was: "...a .010" underbore size ball and an .018" patch..."

If the bore in question...a .54cal in this thread...was not a true .540" then the .530" ball wouldn't be .010" undersize.

My statement is based on using T/C .45/.50/.54 cal barrels, first all caplocks, then a set of Flintlocks...plus GM .40/.50/.54/.58 cal barrels;

Short starter:

I did try a different combination today.

I used a .535 ball and a .010 patch. A good smack got it started, and then it was a tight fit, but ok. It was more accurate than the .530/.015 combo.

For some reason I can't get a .530 ball and a .018 pillow ticking patch started without distorting the ball, and then it's way too tight to get down the bore.

Anyway, no matter I like my latest combination.

I prefer .520 balls and thick patches. You shouldn't have a tough time loading the correct combo.
