I use a 16 for small game, upland bird and turkey (though yet to take one with the fowler). Seems a good all-around gauge to me. I don't shoot round ball out of it...I suppose I could but have rifles for that.

1 1/8 or 1 1/4 oz shot, most often #6 for small game or #7 for bird (#6 if I'm walking around and may find either). 1 1/2 of #5 for to turkey. 75 grains of 2F. YMMV ...

Finding the correct size ball was the biggest challenge…

This deer was killed with 70 grn fffg & a patched .626 roundball..25 yards more or less.

Skychief load using 2 ozs of # 6 shot on the tree rats..
Cylinder bore Tip Curtis made smoothbore..
Bore mics .653… iirc.🤷‍♂️
