In my last post I DID say "I can see no sense in continuing this thread if it descends into invective."

However, I was MORE than amazed when Mr Treestalker suggested that I was some sort of sycophant. I have spent much of my time (as an unpaid volunteer, which cuts down on my shooting severely) battling with the "Powers-that-be", especially those politicians who treat the law-abiding shootier with utter contempt. They are aided by many of the pen-pushers in the Home Office and, of course, by many in the Police. I have disagreed publicly with much of the legislation on firearms -- even to the extent of speaking publicly at the Trafalgar Square rally after Dunblane, taking part in conferences and so on. I still spend a lot of time giving advice to Police Firearms Licensing Departments --- at least those whose stance is that they are there to ADMINISTER the Law rather than to MAKE it. I think that Zonie's comment makes a lot of sense, and am sorry that the thread was divertd from its principal purpose --- BUT the problem could well be that -- as with Politics and Religion -- maintaining decorum in a forum on "Firearms Laws" might be difficult ;-)

Let's just all agree that in the present climate our public image is very important, and providing ammunition for the "antis" is not a good idea.

I hope that Britsmoothy continues to provide good advice in those areas where he has expertise: I will also try to keep on trying to expand the opportunities for the law-abiding person to continue with our traditions ... ... perhaps eventually we might not be trated as pariahs.

I have wandered along the firing points. Some impressive stuff going on. Made a bit of smoke myself today with my Ruger Old Army and my favourite bundhook, my PH Enfield 2 band. Room for improvement with 8” spread at 50 yards.

On a certain level I wish I was in Bisley shooting. Been good to see some friends from the other Countries.

I have a mobile home at Bisley, just having lunch after second clean of my PH. Anyone visiting Surrey (nice people shooters) will be welcome to visit.

Sadly, only juice. Having a beer stops driving (She Who Must Be Obeyed wants to go shopping) and of course, shooting. Just because I've cleand them doesn't mean I'm not going out again :)

We broke every law ever made as kids. Once duck hunting we shot teal when the sun was up but had no time for sunrise that day. The sun was up fully over the horizon but we got a $20 ticket. Needed a few more minutes to be legal. Those that write the laws are plain stupid. Here in the states bag limits are based on road kills or farm destruction. Farmers by me shoot over 200 deer in fields without reporting so bag limits go down. I hunted Ohio where I had unlimited tags for orchard and farm damage. I hunted Ravenna arsenal and would shoot 5 deer but had to give away 4. Then they trapped deer from there and Plum Brook to populate the state. At one time if you seen a deer you called the paper.
I got old and we have deer in the yard that I will not hunt, 10 squirrels and many doves at the feeders. Carol will gripe but puts out corn. She sounds tough but we have a 3 legged deer with fawns and she feeds them.

Bisleyjohn ... are you shooting your Ruger OA in the Surrey Branch MLAGB "Repeating Pistol Meeting" 14/15 September. Designed to allow ANY level of shooter to have some fun and a chance of winning a Skilled Shot Certificate, using all types of ML revolver or the "Patriot" --- let's use it and keep the traditions of the older NRA Courses which we had:
One OR two hands, BP OR substitutes OR smokeless conversions, everything from a fifty quid old Uberti replica via originals (normally Tranters, Adams and an R&S) and the costly specialised target revolvers (Feinwerkbau etc...), "Free Revolver" (almost anything goes!) .... etc...
details on the Surrey Branch website... or chat to me at the Bristol Antqiue Arms Show this coming Saturday. Actually if Britshmoothy is there it would be nice to have a chat and "smooth" (!) things over ;-)

Jim, if you hadn’t guessed, it’s John Gardener (ex grumpy old sod in the Range Office)

I’m at Bisley, currently until the Friday of your meeting which I haven’t entered.

I’m here for the European ‘F’ class Championships and the PSUK the following week.

Plan is to get the boss back home after that (been her a month by then) for her beloved Plymouth Argyle.

Can’t do Bristol either for reasons above.

I am at site 8/12 (Under the White Ensign) tea/coffee (and other beverages) available.
