In my last post I DID say "I can see no sense in continuing this thread if it descends into invective."
However, I was MORE than amazed when Mr Treestalker suggested that I was some sort of sycophant. I have spent much of my time (as an unpaid volunteer, which cuts down on my shooting severely) battling with the "Powers-that-be", especially those politicians who treat the law-abiding shootier with utter contempt. They are aided by many of the pen-pushers in the Home Office and, of course, by many in the Police. I have disagreed publicly with much of the legislation on firearms -- even to the extent of speaking publicly at the Trafalgar Square rally after Dunblane, taking part in conferences and so on. I still spend a lot of time giving advice to Police Firearms Licensing Departments --- at least those whose stance is that they are there to ADMINISTER the Law rather than to MAKE it. I think that Zonie's comment makes a lot of sense, and am sorry that the thread was divertd from its principal purpose --- BUT the problem could well be that -- as with Politics and Religion -- maintaining decorum in a forum on "Firearms Laws" might be difficult ;-)
Let's just all agree that in the present climate our public image is very important, and providing ammunition for the "antis" is not a good idea.
I hope that Britsmoothy continues to provide good advice in those areas where he has expertise: I will also try to keep on trying to expand the opportunities for the law-abiding person to continue with our traditions ... ... perhaps eventually we might not be trated as pariahs.
