TC Hawkin 50 Cal. not shot in 15 years

Hi , I have a 50 Cal. TC Hawken that I have not shot in 15 years, ( yea I know, I'm getting back into it) I need to know what, if any precautions I need to take before I take it to the range. Any advice would help. Thanks in advance

I would just clean it to make sure everything is ship shape. I would pull the lock and put a few drops of oil in the wear areas and make sure it functions like it should.

At the range just pop a cap to clean out any residual oil in the breech, load and have fun.

I had several homemade muzzies that I let sit unused and unattended for 20 years. All I did was to run a clean patch down them to see if there was any major rust issue going on down at the breech plug threads. Discovering none, I just went out and shot them. To my amazement, I had forgotten how fun they are. Now I'm hooked again... darned it. Now I've got to spend more money to feed this addiction.

Make sure that Hawken is unloaded before you try to load it again. 15 years is a long time to remember something like that. Then have fun! :grin: GW

My situation is almost identical, my Thompson .54 cal Hawkins was in storage here in California for 16 years when I was living in Taiwan. I got it out of storage and like folks mentioned, got it cleaned up.

But I come to find out Thompson no longer sells .54 cal Hawkins (just the .50 cal version). What is the best internet/mail order place to get .54 cal supplies (e.g. cleaning jags, round balls and so on).

I can't wait to get out and fire that rifle!

I just got a .45 cal Hawken, that hadn't been fired since '79. Cleaned the barrel and took it out - no problems (except for a dry-ball, but can't figure out how to blame the gun).

I don't think there is really a "best". Track, Dixie, Mid South. There should be a local sporting goods that has stuff for ya,

When we were kids, relative of mine got "great granddads" rifle out of the attic. We were about 13 or 14 at the time and I had just bought a Navy Arms BP revolver mail order ( for about $30 I think) and was therefore enthused with BP shooting. The rifle was a .50 Hawkin and had been in the attic for at least 80 years or so. That was the first muzzuleloading rifle I ever shot.
No problems shooting it!

if are saying that T/Cs are not the best made traditional style rifles, i have to really disagree with you.

it's like comparing a BENZ 450S (T/C) to a Ford Pinto (CVA, LYMAN, TRADITIONS. ect.) and yes i do have those 3 other brands too, but my point is the T/Cs are better quality.

but to each thier own. we all have a right to an opinion.

Hi Folks,
Yes, I meant "the best store", not "the best rifle". And I appreciate the help with the link. One of the things I did notice in the 15 years I was gone to Taiwan (actually America changed in many, many over those years) but the one relevant change I noticed was when I left most medium sized gun stores stocked black powder supplies.

Nowadays, at least here in San Diego, it looks like only one gun store stocks black powder stuff and they are some distance from me.
