Teflon tape as a bullet wrap

Seems to me that your cloth patch thickness needs to be worked on.
You didn't say what thickness or type of patch you were using to patch the ball in your post. Perhaps if we knew we could make some recommendations.

In the meantime, I don't think teflon tape would do much to improve matters but you could always give it a try and see what happens.

I should have been more specific. I am shooting Hornady 385 grain GPB and Thor 247 grain Hammers, both full bore conicals. No patch or ball in that setup.

What size ball are you using. I have a .50 caliber rifle that I have to use a .500 ball and a .015 patch in order to get any accuracy out of the gun. You might want to try a larger diameter ball or thicker patches. I prefer to go with a larger ball if I can load it without too much trouble.

Ah-ha!
With a slug like your using, a wrap of Teflon tape around the bullet might help things. Like I said, give it a try and let us know what happens.

Here is a method Idaholewis used on his paper patched bullets. You might try it this way to keep bullet on powder.
Quote from Idaholewis on Modern Muzzleloader Forum

"Here is another method that i came up with to tighten up a PP Bullet for Hunting, I did this about a Year ago. I tested the cold bore Shot loaded like this for Several days in a Row, accuracy was not effected in the least, My Cold bore shots Hit right where they supposed to when Loaded this way. With paper measuring 0.002 single, this ads 0.004 to the Bullet, if you load your Cold bore shot like this it will NOT budge until you Pull the Trigger! :yeah:"

My $.02 worth.

Hmmmmmm...
Isn't wrapping a bullet with teflon the same as wrapping it with a plastic sabot?
Teflon tape is a modern plastic and fibre concoction.
And if wrapping with a modern tape is ok then would wrapping with a copper jacket be any different????

Paper on the other hand, is traditional....

I have to agree with you there Griz, but as you will notice Idaholewis's method is paper not teflon, although i have seen him use or mention teflon one time before.
:dunno:

I've used it years ago on copper thor bullets when we were using them in a cabelas hawken with a poorly made barrel that belled out to .503-504" at the breech. Never had any issues with the tape.

That sounds exactly like my Cabelas Hawken and Thor bullet I am using. Did you notice if the tape helped your first shot from a clean barrel group better with shots from a fouled barrel? How many wraps of tape did you use? What powder volume did you use (I'm starting at 70 grain pyrodex rs). So many questions!

If you live in the northern hemisphere of the earth, wrap it clockwise. If the southern hemisphere, counter-clockwise.

Absolutely incorrect. The earth spins the same direction, from west to east, no matter where you are on it. Your "THEORY" is nothing more than washerwomans' mythological, voodoo, hyped-up, overplayed and thoroughly accepted blindly by the ignorant mass tripe.

However, the direction of wrap does apply and must be kept in mind when shooting in a northerly or southerly direction. The laws of science forbid firing in a due east or west direction.
