Ps; did the op mean “stair well”?

No Sir. The stair wall is the wall that faces the mid-landing of a stair that ascends to it from at least two sides, As you enter the hall, the stair-wall faces you, with a section of stair on each side of the hall leading up to it.

the difference between English, and english. American english that is.
 
Saw the same thing while in Scotland this past September. One wall was in King James V castle in Stirling. The other was a "replica" wall in the cafeteria building of the ruins of a castle on the Isle of Skye.

These displays of arms are also south of the border , they first were made by the castle estate to form their own militia on account of the Napoleon threat. and others ,notice they are flintlocks
