I built my GPR, and the nippled was too big for a #11 cap.
I ordered a new nipple (Knight Hot Shot), but in the interim I tried to file the existing one down.
I got my new nipple yesterday, installed it...and it's too SMALL for a #11 cap. They fall right off of it!!
Back to trying to file down the original one properly.

I should've bought a flinter. :cursing:

I throw the nipples in a drill chuck to spin them against a file to size it up. This has worked well for me.

Caps come in both #10 and #11 sizing, altho from what McKeal found, there is a lot of difference between manufacturers as to what those measurements should be!

It sounds like you were sent a nipple for the smaller, #10 caps. Send it back, and ask for a nipple for a RIFLE. The #10 sized nipples are made for the reproduction revolvers. Some of the staff working for suppliers haven't a clue that there is a difference!

It came in a sealed, original Knight package (from Midway that says #11 on it.

That sealed package only means that some moron at the factory may have put the wrong nipple in the bag!

Send it back to Midway. Tell the brand of caps you are using and the problem you are having with that nipple. You can pinch caps to help them grab the neck of the nipple, and get by, but you'll be a lot happier with a properly sized nipple.

Personally, I would rather have a nipple that is a little small in the neck, than one that is too large. I can deal with both, but pinching caps is much easier. After a shot or two, you can learn to leave part of the neck "dirty" ( you do wipe the nipple between shots, don't you?) to help hold the caps and then you probably won't even have to pinch the caps.

How much of a size difference is there between a 10 and 11 (just trying to determine if it is the wrong one). It's not visibly smaller, and there's no play in the cap when it's sitting on it...it's just not snug enough to stay put.

Mule brains trick works, many of us have done it with files or honing stones to get a better fit.

Remington caps fit perfect on my Lyman muzzleloaders but CCI's fall off. Same with my revolver that has #11 nipples. I've been meaning to mic those caps to see what they measure.

try the remington caps in #10. I had that problem with my cap and ball revolver. I swithed to the #10 rems from #11 cci and haven't had a problem since.

I wouldn't go that extreme for a rifle. Your cap and ball revolver has #10 nipples on it. #10's are too small for a rifle nipple. I think a switch from CCI 11's to Remington 11's will do the trick.

The standards for the size of percussion caps seem to be a bit lax but averaging several sizes Dixie lists for them tells me that a #10 cap has an inside diameter of .167 inches.
A #11 cap has an inside diameter of around .172 inches.

That's only a .005 difference (or about 1 1/2 black human head hairs.), far too small of a difference to be able to see without some form of precision measuring gage.
