Saturday 1-4-24

Took the 2 hr drive north to Tioga State Forest and arrived before light.
Slip hunted all day long, it was blowing and a high of 22. Fresh 1" of snow.
Went almost 11 miles the phone said.
Only jumped one deer at noon, a small buck, and couldn't see if he had 3 on a side to be legal and I never had any great shot opportunity.
Continued to hunt only to find a few tracks congregated near clear cuts as usual.
The day was coming to a near close and I was in a cut, walking down a dead fall, stepped to the ground and looked below me amazed to see a large doe was standing there quartering to me locked onto me, a good 70 yards away.
I swung the gun and touched it off at 4:59 pm, and she only went about 50 yards.
Heart shot with no blood trail. Entered her left shoulder and exited forward of the rear leg.
She was the 2nd deer I saw the whole day.

14th flintlock deer, 82nd PA whitetail.

.58 Early PA gun
70 grains 3F
.562 hand cast ball
.015 ticking lubed with beargrease/beeswax

At 4:59 p.m., the snow must have made a lot of difference in getting off a shot. And thank God for snow in dragging that big doe out!
It did.

My phone allowed long exposure time to pull in light, it looks lighter in the photos than it actually was when I recovered her.
At the time of the shot I could easily see my sights, but light was fading for sure.

congrats to you. nice doe

I went out Sunday on my property in near-white-out snow conditions. I sat in my ground blind for around 6 hours and didn't see anything. I gave up at about 1:00 PM and went and played in my Polaris RZR for about an hour and headed home, at the end of the day there was about a foot of snow on the ground.
I would have been happy to have seen a doe that size because that's just what I was hoping for I planned to make jerky with the whole thing with the exception of the loin.
Nicely done sir, nicely done.
