I am going through Nashville Monday and was thinking about stopping by Tip Curtis's shop.
I can see where Cross Plains is off I65. How far off 65 is Tip's shop, is is on the main road(25)?

About 5 min. off I-65.

Going north out of Nashville, Exit #112 (Cross Plains exit) & go to the end of the ramp & turn Left & go over I-65. (You are going West) Go aprox 5 miles & when you come into Cross Plains you will see a barbecue resturant with a pink pig on the left, turn left just past the resturant, that is Jernigan Road. Go about 1/2 mile & just as you make a bend right & come over a knoll you will see on the left a large limestone rock house sitting back in a big field, that is Tips house & the shop is to the left of the house. I would call him before going to insure he is home. 615-654-4445

I try to stop by there ever 2-3 months. Don't plan on leaving quickly, cause you ain't gonna want to leave...........

:haha:

Keep your eyes on the left side of the road. It's very easy to pass the house and shop.

I live about a 45 min. drive away. :winking:

Could someone tell a noob (me) about Tip Curtis and his shop? It is within a half-days drive.

Eric where in Dixie are you? I am in Tuscaloosa.

Tip has a real nice shop up in Cross Plains TN. He has normally over 100 rifles built & ready to sell & usually 5-10 more he is building. He has literally hundreds of barrels, stocks, locks, you name it, he has it. Good quality parts, not always the cheapest in the land but within reason always & the quality is Good & you can lay out the parts for a complete rifle right there before your eyes & pick & choose from a Large variety of parts for all sorts of rifles. No tellin how many rifle parts sets I have bought from Tip & he has always treated me well. I like to stop there just to see what he has new cause he is always having a new lock made or new buttplates & lots of dif styles, etc.

Depending on where you are around Tuscaloosa, but figure on it taking ya 4.5 to 5 hrs to drive it if ya don't get hung in traffic in B'ham or Nashville. But you can go up & back in a day easily & you will be glad ya did.

Now ya'll are going to think I'm kidding but if you turn off the interstate and go the wrong way, there is an antique place with a huge pink elephant in the parking lot. If you go the right way you see the pink pig.
Blacksburg,
Tip's is a candy store for gun builders. He has a huge warehouse filled with gun parts. Several racks filled with built guns and in the white guns. Walls full of stocks to pick from and he's just an all around nice guy.

Thanks all for the info -- noob and all. I am working on exploring outside of the county. I took my car outside of the county this week -- third time in 18 months.

Anyway, it sounds like something ideal for someone (me) who wants to explore the styles that he wants to build. In the absence of concrete examples, I have been driven to guns from the aesthetics of the lines (the Tulle) or the history (the Marshall).

If you go, do two of three things. For sure bring a drool towel, and second either leave the credit card at home, or call now and get your limit raised. :)

Bill

I started with nothing, and still have most of it left!

Well, leave the credit card at home cause it won't do you any good at Tips. He takes cash & checks.

As for styles, you will have a wonderful selection there as he usually has at least one of about everything built for you to shoulder. I took this photo a couple years ago & if I remember correctly there are 50 rifles on each rack & there were 3 racks & each full (maybe one rifle less here & there) & that is not counting what is there with barrels taped to stocks & etc. If you go there & don't find a style ya like, you don't want a ML. Now I am talking style, not a particular rifle there, but looking for a style of rifle ya like, I don't know anyone that has a selection like Tip has.

Just got back from Tip's shop and my head is still spinning. I am new to this stuff and he was so helpful with my newbee questions, showed me around his shop, where he made guns and explained the difference in his parts and some of the others available.

I see a precarve turkey gun fowler in my future, just have to finish my current Beck first.

My wallet was a little lighter when I left, wish I had bought one of his gun building benches. This occurred to me when I was about 10 miles from Nashville headed home.

Packdog, we seem to have a lot of large fiberglass animals in this area... A few miles away in Tiny Town (Guthrie) there is a large pink elephant, and less than a hundred yards away, a big black and white cow with sunglasses....

Shoot Pink Pigs ain't got nothing on Horse Cave-- about 20 miles north of Bowling Green on I-75 there's a 30 foot high orange T-Rex!

 Well,I went to Tip Curtis's Shop fri. and sat. had to see it twice. I'm building a gun from spare parts (LEMAN) told Tip what I was doing and what I was looking for ' 45 mins. of show and tell later all the parts I needed were laying on his counter and my money was in his register, very fair priced. Tip is a good fellow an very helpfull' fun to talk with. I saw you at TWIN OAKS Erik how did you do , I didn't shoot this year bought a knife from your old Buddy George I did.
