Just before 1:00 PM, the Eagle has landed. No too Jazzed about the plastic stock, but I have my original. As a side bonus, I can find no evidence either the shotgun, or rifle barrel have ever been fired.
I'm not a fan of the looks of the synthetic stock, but they take a beating. You can use the poly stock for hunting and save your walnut stock for safer environments.

I was thinking if I use the plastic one, a rattle can paint job. But it's pretty lite. I think the wood is heavier, better for recoil methinks.

I'd be careful painting it, unless it's a lifetime keeper. You've got a nice (and valuable) little set there, and I would think painting even the synthetic stock would hurt it.

If you're like me, I barely feel recoil when I'm shooting at a deer. Target shooting is a different story. If it were me, I'd be using that wood stock at the range, and the plastic one in the field. Plus, the plastic stock will shave off some carry weight.

I'm going to try both stocks probably. I agree with the recoil, I usually hunt the Illinois gun season with 12 gauge slugs. My original newenglander is still in good shape after all these years. She had quite the hiatus though. She'll see plenty of action this coming season. I just need to order up the supplies for the shotgun.

Where you from in Illinois? I grew up in southeastern IL, Edwards County.
