Traditional Staining for Curly Stocks??

Hi all. Please help. I need recipes and methods for obtaining that beautiful lustrous luminous deep chatoyantly dramatic curly maple staining and finish that be found on the fine old shootin' pieces. (Acid?)
Any help will be gratefully appreciated.
