Working on an older Traditions "Hawken" and I noticed the pie shaped cut out on the front of the hammer is somewhat larger than the cut outs on my newer hammers. I understand the purpose, but how big is to big ? Anything to be concerned with ? -Thanks

The notch makes cap removal easier because it allows the portion of the cap sidewall under the notch to expand a bit into the notch ILO staying locked onto the nipple.

Within limits, I don't think a bit larger notch makes much difference.

I got a big discount on a used BP rifle from a pawn shop once because the man behind the counter thought the hammer had a split in it. Who am I to argue with a gun store Guru?
