Triangle relief cut on front of hammer ?

Working on an older Traditions "Hawken" and I noticed the pie shaped cut out on the front of the hammer is somewhat larger than the cut outs on my newer hammers. I understand the purpose, but how big is to big ? Anything to be concerned with ? -Thanks

Since the notch directs the flames forward, there is little to be concerned about.

It makes picking out a stubborn (fired) cap easier.

The notch makes cap removal easier because it allows the portion of the cap sidewall under the notch to expand a bit into the notch ILO staying locked onto the nipple.

Within limits, I don't think a bit larger notch makes much difference.
