I DARE you! No, I TRIPLE-DOG DARE you!
Get another person involved in ML/BP shooting in 2011.
Here's how it works:
**100 points for each new BP shooter introduced to the sport
**An extra 50 points for each of those shooters who take the bait and buys a gun
**An extra 10 points per additional gun purchased in the calendar year 2011 by that person
**An additional 25 points if that shooter becomes a contributing member on this forum.

This contest is based on the honor system, there are no prizes awarded other than an "Atta boy!" by your fellow contestants, but know that your efforts are appreciated by those of us who want to give something back to the sport.
Post your expectations and results on this thread, if you would be so kind:
Example: In 2010 I hooked my biz partner into:

Becoming a PB shooter=100 pts
Buying a GPR=50 pts.
Becoming a forum contributing member=25 pts.
Total=175 pts.

Naturally, this does not count towards my 2011 total.
So, let me be the first to project that I will attempt to bring in at least one additional shooter this year (2011)
Up to the challenge?
C'mon...I triple dog dare you!

I can handle this as I've already done it Kirk!

Maybe Claude will want to kick-in a complimentary paid one year subscription as the prize?

Now I need to work on someone else in the club that has an inkling about the holy black OR has a rifle laying in a closet gathering dust! Get that person to try the hobby once more, this time with expert instruction, so ignition problems go away! :)

Dave

My friend stuck his tongue on the light post at our skating rink in Minnesota when I was a kid. When his dad showed up, he grabbed the boy by the shoulders and ****** :shocked2: There was a perfect layer of tongue flesh stuck to that pole and blood pouring out of my friends mouth. I don't care if you triple dog dared me,I ain't sticking my tongue on no metal pole in the winter time. Oh, I see....that's not the dare. I'm working on getting a Boy Scout group out to the range, so maybe there is hope yet for me.

Your contribution to the furthering of our sport...and accolades from your peers! (Sorry, that's all I've got at present!)

***wink wink, nudge nudge, cough**
Whattya say, Claude?

well I know I got 1 or 2 going to start shooting soon. like me waiting on tax returns. I realy hope they join in on the fun of bp guns. hey do ya get extra points if you get them into a rondy club?

one "atta boy" entitles you to sit at the camp fire with men but only allowed to drink root beer.
two "atta boy's" entitles you to your very own "possible" bag.
five "atta boy's" allows you shoot a "hero's" BP gun.
Ten "atta boy's" you are considered and generally spoken of as a "Hero" of the Forum.
Seeing, heáring of, or finding out about one of your new Forum members carrying, shooting, buying or talking about a "inliner" will be rewarded with an "ah crap" which makes all "atta boy's" null and void. You have to return your "possibles" bag and drink root beer for one year. :rotf:

This would get me in trouble cause I have to talk about inlines when I teach Hunter Safety classes. I dont have anything good to say and tell all my students that they might as well be shooting a modern gun--and am usually holding a FL GPR while telling them this. I am required to cover inlines from a sefety standpoint, but make no secret of my dislike of them.

Speaking of these courses, I have a chance to get 10 new BP shooters in a couple of weeks. Hey, I can hope...

The "prize" is the appreciation and companionship gained with the new shooter introduced.

Over the past ten years I have initiated and introduced six people to trad muzzle loading. All but one is a family member. All have acquired guns and hunted with them. They also shoot regularly in competitions.

This year I'll be adding another grandson to ml shooting. About the time I can barely drag myself into the woods to hunt he will be big enough to carry my meat out for me. :haha: I still have three more grand kids to add but they need to grow a bit more.

I like your idea of getting people involved. I probably won't be keeping track of my points cause it would not be fair to the rest of you! :blah: :haha:

We hear all the time about our shrinking ranks, but we only need to look as far as our own families and friends to add shooters. Seems like the ratio of old guys to young guys at shoots gets larger every year (at least in CO). Some of those guys must have kids and grand kids. Don't understand why they are not bringing them out to shoot. I hear that they are all too busy playing video games and hanging out at the mall, etc. That's :bull: . Those kids will go through the roof with excitement over attending a rendevous or shoot. Sometimes I wonder if maybe we just don't want to bother or maybe we see the kids as being a distraction from our own shooting and fun? :idunno:

I agree with you! We need to instill the need to introduce young people to the sport in some of our curmudgeon friends!

Here's some ideas for those of you that want to try to make a difference: Gun clubs, 4-H, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts are all places where our "target market" gather on a regular basis. It's easier to get a junior outdoors-man hooked on muzzleloading than it is to go cold-turkey and try to pull a kid away from a computer game system. At least that's what has worked for me all of these years.

Have your local gun club sponsor an Open House or a Day at the Range. Get the Moms involved too, cause they're the ones schlepping the kids around to various after-school events! Have the Moms try a muzzleloader so they understand how safe the sport really is, and their offspring will be clamoring to try it too!

It all starts with a commitment to pass our knowledge and love for the sport on to others. May we all be blessed in this most sacred endeavor :) .

Now you've done it. A TRIPPLE DOG DARE!

That's right...I've bypassed the entire dare hierarchy by going straight for the triple-dog. Now, in the movie, Schwartz only bypassed the triple dare, if you recollect:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLZj3zOUZNs

But I feel this is enough of a challenge to go right for the throat, and so the gauntlet has been thrown.
Grandkids, women and children are all fair game. Spouses too. All that matters is that they've never shot BP before. Oh, and also that you get 'em hooked!
Think about it a second; if there are 18,000 registered members here, and half of us introduce ONE newbie to BP, that would be a 9,000 new shooter increase this year alone.
Just for kicks and grins, let's review 2010;
I introduced one new shooter (who was severely and I believe, fatally bitten by the bug). Another one heard us talking and checked it out on his own. Not sure if he will carry on, but we got him to try it, anyway!
Smokin'.50 got 2 fatherless boys to give it a try that I know of..and at least one is hooked! :v
Josh Smith got his sister-in law to try it out. And I'm sure there were plenty of other stories I missed, so please...tell us your 2010 story! :yakyak:

OK, here's a start.

2010: brought 2 guys to the range at different times. They'd never fired a gun let alone BP. Ran them through some different weapons and calibers, mostly modern but some BP as well. They loved it and both asked to come back but do it as a BP only session. I was thrilled! These are young folks, early 20s and early 30s and I thought they would prefer the semi-auto gear to the slower ML pace. I was wrong. I'll be working with them this year as their schedules permit.

2011: Already committed to introduce a friend and a new cousin to BP once the weather improves. One is salivating over trying a flintlock. The other is a Civil War enthusiast and wants to try the C&B revolvers. Glad to oblige.

A thought for 2011. This summer marks the 150th anniversary of First Manassas/Battle of Bull Run. There may be heightened public interest in the guns of the period and BP in general. Could be a teaching opportunity here. I know the Manassas area is planning a big reenactment and other local events and can only assume similar observences will be done for Antietam, Gettysburg, etc., over the next few years.

Oh. I already did that since I started. Actually twice now. Once with a friend's boy (he now has the Bobcat) and once with my brother's fiance (there's a video).

Trying to talk a third person into trying it. He's into modern guns and when you mention .50 or even .45 to a modern gunner who is used to .22, .38 and 9mm, it's a bit intimidating.

Probably have to have another friend, a female police dispatcher, shoot one first. The guy I'm trying to talk into trying it out is her boyfriend :rotf:

After she shoots one, ain't no way he's gonna let his woman show him up! :blah:

Yup, I tend to be devious.

:)

But I don't think I'll participate in a contest for it. I mean, you're awesome and all for doing this. The reward is the personal satisfaction I get. I mean, if there were a Hawken or a lefty flinter long rifle, or something like that, up for grabs, then yeah, I might brag a bit and take pics. I'm just not skilled enough to teach and film at the same time.

For those who are, man, I'm anxiously awaiting pics. Any shooting sport is a good thing, and the more doors that are open to the discipline, the better.

Props to you, Kirk, for suggesting this!

Josh

No. We don't discuss "Modern inlines" here. Klingons are not allowed on this forum, either.
Sorry, but it has to be that way..... :blah:

Josh

I think maybe "contest" was the wrong word, as that infers "contestants" and "prizes". A better description would be "challenge". I'm challenging all of you to introduce ONE, just one, new person to our world this year. For the betterment of our sport, and to keep the torch burning, if for no other reason. If we make a conscious effort to do this, with our 18,000+ strong membership, we can do far more than any other group or forum in less time than they could ever organize such an event. So, are you with me?

BRB, props to you for your 2010 accomplishments. If you pull off your 2011 goal, that would put you in the lead!
Go for it!!!!!
