Several outlets have 5lb boxes of Hornady .350 buckshot sized 000. Can this be used patched in a 36 caliber Green Mountain barrel and not hurt the barrel?

Not going to hurt the barrel.

Buckshot is harder than pure lead.

Could break the short starter when seating the ball.

Could break the wood ramrod when seating the ball.

Could break the stock at the wrist when using a range rod.

Some folks never check the oil in their truck either.

Your choice, not my rifle.

Used 0 in sons .32. Match the patch to the ball and barrel. We used mink oil from TOW for lube. No issues. Grandson will start using that gun and combo soon.

I use 00 1/2 (.340) in my 36 with no issues.
They are softer than wheel weights.
And just a touch harder than pure lead.
You can get the 00 1/2 at ballistic products.com
8lb for 36.90. I always found triple 000 to be to tight in my gun. Hope this helps.

Thank you. Will use pure lead. Just curious as to what the others on this forum were using.

OOO buck is all I shoot in my 36 cal. muzzle loaders.
Never had a problem!

No worries! They work fine. Have Used the hornady Buck and the Hornady .350 balls and see no difference in a GM barrel. Find the right patch and your good to go.

I have used Hornady buck in 0,00,000,and 0000 when they still made it but have swithced to another supplier foro 4 aught now. I have used it in muzzle loaders and for making small game loads in CF. Hornady's buckshot does have antimony added but it is only a VERY LITTLE bit harder than pure lead. Far softer than most wheel weights.

I have never had a problem with any of the many pounds of it I have used and it is a lot cheaper than buying round ball. I would not be the least bit afraid to use it in your ML but Mic it before you buy. Most of the 4 aught I have bought is a lot closer to .375 than .35 so it could be pretty tight. 3 aught is usually .350 and works good in a

Yes there are worries.

If you use buck sot in rifles maybe not so.

But using buck shot in a pistol using a loading stand, there is worry if you do not have knowledge.

Having shot both the buck and swager .350 balls, it would not concern me. There is no determinable difference between the two.

I suspect that many shooters casting their own balls are getting ball harder than the buck just on the basis of lead purity.

Been using Hornady 000 buck in my .36 for years. If there is any difference in performance between it and balls that I have cast from pure lead, I am not good enough of a shot to be able to tell the difference. It works fine for me and is a lot cheaper than buying .350 rifle balls.

I try to buy pure lead, but unless you buy from a source of guaranteed purity, you will often get stuff that is not pure. It all loads just fine and shoots just fine.

Maybe if I was a "High Master" I'd be more discerning. But, then I would probably have to live in a cave in Nepalese Himalayas. :haha:

I don't see why not! I've cast ball from WW and loaded them as usual and the accuracy was identical to the pure lead.

Did not know the folks who shoot in Friendship live where you speak, how do they ship their guns to Indiana?
