Some while back I saw a muzzleloader with an absolutely gorgeous stock. I was a bit confused as a CVA normally did not come with such fancy wood. Got my magnifying glass out and looked at it more closely. Under 10x magnification the halftone screen could be clearly seen; the surface of the stock was coated with some kind of plastic that had the image of the wood surface printed in four colors.

I would suppose this ramrod material is similar?

I made and sold Delrin ram rods for years. In that time I tested a large variety of materials trying to find one that looked like wood but performed as well as Delrin. I tried all kinds of rods including many phenolics. I never found one that resisted lateral force (bending). All broke, some dangerously like bad hickory. Despite having a bad case of the ughs (or is it uhgs?), I stuck with Delrin for non-pc events because of it's strength, safety and that it is not a danger to the rifle bore.

Did you ever find a way to make them look better than delrin stock?

No and that is a big down side. My first ones were white because it was the only thing I could get short of buying about 10,000 in a special order. Then black became available. I used black after that but sanded them to get rid of the shiny look.

Hey Rifleman, I ordered a stainless range rod and an extra rod for my Traditions Woodsman from T.O.W. The range rod is great. They advertised the spare as Delrin which I thought might be better than the functional, but noodle-like rod that came with the rifle. It is exactly the same rod w the exception being that the brass ends are not pinned on the Track rod. They both have print on them that says; "Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Material Acetron G" followed by some coding etc. [Just like the original Hawken bros rods, I'm sure.] My son-in-law's old T.C. Hawken has what I think is a Delrin rod w a bit of a wood grain look and it seems way stiffer and much more like the Delrin I know from knife handles. This stuff is chocolate brown, kinda sorta ploody [as in pleather] and really whippy. It was $20 so I guess I will pin it and have a sameole spare for hunting. Haven't broke the original but... This isn't "Delrin", is it ? Sorry if this is a hijack. Curiosity got the better of me. SW

Crow, sorry to get off topic w my post while everyone is trembling [like me] w suspense. Also, I couldn't help noticing-your hand are as ugly as mine. In fact, I thought that was mine for a second. Are you a carpenter too? My son says I am a badger. If my hands weren't getting uglier as fast as my wife's eyesight is going bad I'd probably be living on the couch.
