The dark stock in the middle of the three really catches my eye.:thumb:
That one is Aqua Fortis, followed by a light coat of Minwax Red Mahogany stain, rubbed back a lot with steel wool, and the 3 coats of tru oil. The first was sanded in with 1000g, the last two were hand rubbed.

Not exactly the most historically correct finish, but it got me where I wanted to be.

I'm not sure the finish process for the others, as I didn't build them.

Somewhere within the vast information contained within this forum is information on, and a link to an article about, using a red additive like madder (maybe something called "dragons blood") to a clear finish the way violins are finished. I think this may have been used on some original Lehigh rifles, could be wrong on the school though. Regardless, it is a beautiful finish and color.

Here is one I had before

I have four TWM’s(pardon the TVA errors) with different stock colorations that I’ve accumulated over the last couple of decades. Not sure the photos do them justice, but they are all nicely finished, and look good in the particular rifle configuration. The SMR and Virginia rifle against the tree were made by Matt Avance. BTW…all great shooters.

What kind of Bug got stuck on your Buttstock? LOL!
this is the stock i rescued from a barn. the friend that bought it 40 years ago carved an eagle on the side. i poured it with cerro safe just because i was too lazy to carve a filler. figured it's my rifle i can live with it.
i have some ivory i may carve someday to replace it with. the heat from a heat gun will melt it out without harming the wood finish so it just keeps the fumunda out of the hole.

Those are great Art! I drooled all over my phone.😂 Do you know what color he used on that Virginia rifle.

I don’t know the color that Matt Avance used. I believe he is still at TWM and would be able to reproduce it or from photos. I bought the rifle over a dozen years ago.
Here are a couple of more pictures.

Is there a conversion table for these acronyms I see in this thread so I can understand what is being said and referenced?

TVM, TVA, TWM?

I must assume that TVA isn't the Tennessee Valley Authority. I know that SMR is Southern Mountain Rifle.

Hello all, I'm getting ready to order a TVM early Virginia rifle. I'm going with Deluxe maple and want to make sure the stain is appropriate to make the figure pop. I remember roundball had on that was sort of reddish that looked amazing. Any suggestions and or pictures appreciated.
Aqua fortis and heat
