Since you have added oil to your powder charge, it is ruined and you cannot shoot the ball out. You have a CO2 discharger on the way so stop messing with the rifle and just wait for the CO2 discharger to get there. Don't mess with it or you could just make it worse. If you had not ruined the initial powder charge by adding oil, as soon as you had seated the ball on the powder, you could have just shot it out. But, you didn't so just wait for the CO2 discharger and pop it out, clean your gun and you will be good to go for your next outing.

Oops! I see you got it out. That's great. Please disregard my previous posting.

I agree with Bill. You should have not fouled the powder. With a mallet and a strong rod you could have seated that ball and just shot it out.
But as you already got it out it is a moot point.

Being a new muzzle-loader shooter, I felt it necessary to neutralize the powder before messing with it, I felt I was not going to be able to get the ball down. I feel that when I threw the oil into the muzzle, enough got into the patch to lube it and was able to seat it. Maybe if I had known I could go back and shoot it later that day or the next day, I'd just tried some oil or let it cool down before trying to seat it, but in hind sight, I could not get back to shoot until this friday at which time, I wanted a perfectly functioning gun (which I have now). Friday I'm there for 5 hours :)
With Hind sight, I would do the same except drive to HF sooner. Without Hind Sight and being able to go back out later, I Would have let it cool and tried to seat the ball. Still not sure if it was cooling down that allowed me to seat it or the oil into the muzzle. But I just did not like the idea of a loaded active muzzleloader. Maybe I was sweating it too much, but that was my gut feeling since my first thoughts were to try pulling the ball.

Got to remember it is different than CF. You can have all the goodies in the barrel. No cap means it's not loaded.

yes, I have not reached my happy place with that yet. I'm still new at this ML thing.
Thx

Don't take it to heart. Just people giving you advice and you can chalk it up to live and learn. We were all beginners once and most of us(probably) had to learn without internet so now adays people are lucky. You didn't really hurt anything, you just did what you thought was best without knowing. Personally I don't like leaving a gun loaded like that either.

When I started I felt just the same, Yesterday 3/19/14 I shot out the load that went in my 50 cal. back in November. Still can't say as I would recommend it. But I had not fired before loading, and I ran a lightly oiled patch down after the PRB (patched round ball) was seated.

After shooting it out I swabbed out with an alcohol patch & not a speck of rust. Shot her about a dozen shots after that and no rust at cleaning.

Well, it shot today. I think part of my issue was the combination of pillow ticking and lube. I used same material and lube (ballistol/water) and pre cut patches. It was HARD to seat the 2-5 shots. I went back to a lower ratio and it was better. Still did not have time to work up my load today. Club had a steel shoot so me and my dad attended that.
I did however have a dry ball today. Pushed the ball down and it went way past my loaded mark. OOOPS, my dad was talking to me and I skipped the powder. I guess I built up the confidence cause I filled a 22LR case, pulled the nipple, and dumped in half, shoved it in and dumped the rest. One shot and I could see the patch fly out. Range rod and it was fully empty. My next 5 were probably the best group yet, EXCEPT on one flyer that I think was from not seating the bullet far enough down. I'll have to try again next time.

Yep you need a routine. We all end up with one. Once I start my routine, you would need to tell me I'm on fire to get me to stop in the middle.

You will end up with your own. If you work off a bench (as opposed to your bag), you could start by taping your ball with your powder measure each time. ***if you have to pick up the measure to tap with, you will have to ask yourself why it is not already in your hand. :idunno:

CAREFULL! Not seating all the way down could bulge the barrel. Always check (that why alot of guys here been discussing marks on the ramrod to assure the load is down all the way!)

 Good point, I bet I give three more pushes afterI think I am well seated.

Anyone else bonce their rod after seating? ***start with the rod in the barrel & about 8" above the seated ball & kind of throw the rod at the ball***

Someplace along the line I started doing that, and for the life of me I can't remember why :rotf:
