This is a hunting load, correct? If so, you need to add penetration tests to your analysis. The BBs intended for BB guns are typically copper-coated steel, I believe, so you REALLY need to ensure that your chosen load will penetrate a tuna can. A pretty pattern that won't penetrate, won't hunt IMO.
I think you're asking a lot of that TC .56, but only proper tests that include pattern AND penetration will tell.
Just words for thought.

Mike

This is EXACTLY why I like talk to all of you! GREAT feedback! I don't know about mess yet...I have NOT fired these yet....but I am not expecting any. The shot cups were pretty clean on the outside.

Yes....hunting loads.....I am hoping to blast a turkey! Excellent thought about the power. I will put up a tin can for testing.

I was surprized at the number of BB's. After I put them in the powder measure, I poured them out and counted them! 60! IF I can keep them close that should work shouldn't it? I don't know.....how many pellets are in a standard 12 ga turkey load?

I might just try the candle cartridge with the number 5's. I just want a tighter pattern so I have an ethical shot. I might just toss the whole idea out the window and use my bow. :(

course...I have just thought about using just one....round ball!!!! :rotf: :rotf: I gave a 400 lb hog a dirt nap with one but it might be a little messy for a yard bird! :idunno:

Although the steel will limit your range, it should improve your pattern. Trying to get a tight pattern with a cyl choke is quite a challenge. Pattern and tin can test at incremented distances to test efficacy.

For pure comparison you could grab a bag of 28ga steel wads and see how the wax load compares.

Why not just slow a ball down a little :idunno:
Ball may not be legal for turkey where he hunts, especially in the spring season. Some states that have fall seasons allow ball or bullet during the fall season.
Personally, I'd forget about the BBs intended for BB guns, and focus on finding an effective load with lead shot (but only proper testing at typical ranges will tell for sure).

Mike

Well, load three of them and call them shot? :idunno:
Yeah, I know...seems odd on the surface. My understanding is the distinction is due to hunter safety. Spring season is the mating/calling season, and restricting to shot only reduces the chance that a hunter-on-hunter accident will be fatal (indiscriminate hunter shooting in the direction of a turkey call, not knowing there's another hunter scratching on his slate call). There's no mating or calling during the fall season, so the list of allowed weapons is often expanded.

As best as I can determine....the Georgia DNR book simply says, "any muzzle loader" under the turkey section. :idunno: SO I guess you could use a conical out of a .50 cal or a .45!!!

To the thread not anyone in particular:

Let me tell you about my turkey shooting experience with the .56 TC with number 6 shot....

Heard some turkey outside. Looked out the window and it was a large flock.
Grabbed my trusty Renegade opened the back door all slow and careful, picked my bird and fired.
Shot at no father than 10 yards.
My turkey drops. I go and investigate and there it is bleeding on the ground and looking like it is deadmeat.
So as it was raining and I was just outside the house I go inside to put the gun away for cleaning after I dress out my bird.
Well as I was thinking that I see a turkey take flight and head into the forest...Yes it was my turkey. I chased in the rain in the forest wearing crocks and a skirt for longer than I should have and never collected my turkey.
So...it left me wanting a 12 gauge.

I should have gave that turkey a butt stroke to the head like my first thought told me to. But I didn't want to get my gun icky...

That's cute! I don't think I have ever thought about getting my gun....icky! :rotf: :rotf:

I got some similar stories. If two of were on Video I would be a rich man! Turkeys really are hard to kill, gotta get a head shot (or neck) and hit em HARD. I always rush em while they flopping and grab ahold hard. Have crushed a few noggins.

Ever wonder why the Europeans bred gundogs?
Any shot gun will fail on a critter at any range for no apparent reason on any occasion it chooses.
I would of took a shot at Cynthia's turkey at ten yards with a 410!

Train a dog guy's n' girls :hatsoff:

More shot...less powder works in my 56 smoothbore.
A cylinder bored barrel will never fire a pattern like the chocked barrels.
At 25 yds I got 12 pellets in the head and neck on a turkey target. 1 1/8 oz of # 6 shot with 70 gr of 2 F BP.

Oh sorry....I thought turkey's are birds :idunno:

B :haha:

no ... birds are what the government says are birds, and only when they are assigned 'bird' designation by the appropriate government department - this would usually be the Office of Status Assignment, but not in all cases. We are not privy to the exceptions, of course, nor are we allowed to question the adequacy or efficacy of any designation of any avian, now or in the future. Such designations are not subject to review, except when so determined by the Supervisory Office of Status Assignment, the schedule and composition of which is not public information.

We can neither confirm or deny the 'bird' status of any avian, but you will know if you have harassed, wrongfully taken or otherwise killed or harmed a 'bird,' because the nice officer will tell you all about the 'rights' which you may or may not have as he or she fits you with the metal bracelets with one link in the middle.

so: birds are not birds, unless those in power say so...

whenever I see a car pass by with 'senate' or 'house of representatives' license tags, I wave in an expression of my complete disgust and distain. you should wave, too, but don't use all of your fingers.

OK - i'll climb off my soap box now before I fall and get hurt ...
