Interesting experience with caps losing their priming. I had a bunch of older Remington caps acquired with some stuff at a garage sale. About 20% had lost priming and the priming was laying in the bottom of the tin in one piece. I tried putting it back in the empty cap to see what would happen. I used a tooth pick or small twig to push then priming back to the bottom of the cap. Most of them fired with no problem. Now, I was just target shooting and plinking so it wasn't a critical situation like hunting or a match, but they worked. I was just too cheap to just throw them away.

The only time I had issues with caps was when I used old caps that someone gave to me. The caps were tarnished and the tin they were packaged in was a bit weathered looking. I suspect the caps were over 20 years old and not kept in a cool dry place.

There were some good suggestions made in this thread concerning nipple flash hole size and rifle maintenance.

Yes, Remington did have that problem some time ago but since then have corrected it.

I use CCI standard caps on my 2 GPRs with no problem. Stock Lyman nipples. However, I have a custom Hawken with an old Cherry Corners lock that pefers the Remington caps, at least if I want it to fire on the first try. I think its a sizing issue, but in my case it could be a weak spring issue as well.
I only shoot real black powder in my sidelocks, but I have shot 777 in unmentionable guns. It is prone to developing a "crud ring" in the breech area after a few shots that requires swabbing to remove.

My Hawken, built with a Cherry Corners lock, never seemed to fail to fire with any brand of cap. Then the main spring broke. Naturally there were no mainsprings available. The L&R late English lock's mainspring was close although the tip was not in the same place. I was able to modify the lock plate and I have been using CCI caps ever since.

The whole enchilada.

I had that happen years ago with Remington caps, I would even find discs laying in the tin. The only time i ever had it happen with CCI was if i was hunting and kept taking the cap off at the end of the day or whatever and saved it to use again. Eventually the disc would fall out or the cap would misfire. I stopped "recycling" the caps and haven't had a problem since.

Right now I am trying to use up the last of the Pyrodex that came with the gun. So that is what I am using.
Pdx is the issue with hang fires. Even with my hot shot nipple, I was getting hang fires...no missfires....but every shot was a hang fire. Never had any problems with real black powder.

So I finally received and installed my new peep sights this week on my TC New Englander. Yesterday I sighted it in! Was supper pleased with the sights! Was not super pleased with caps!!!!!
4 shots in I ran out of the Remington caps I was given when I bought the gun a couple years ago. A month or so ago I bought some CCI caps at Walmart because they had them. I know a lot of the standard ammunition they sell is kind of factory seconds. Well on the low side of tolerance. Because I was on my way hunting and wanted extras I set the Walmart one of to the side. I had my dad pick me up some CCI from sportsman’s warehouse. Yesterday when I went out to sight my rifle I could only find the tin from Walmart.

First Walmart CCI cap was a miss fire. Used the nipple pic then tried second cap. It hung fired. The next five also hung fired. After the third hang fire I pulled the nipple, cleaned it and reinstalled.

So....... has any one else had issues with Walmart CCI caps? How about CCI caps from sportsman? Going back out hunting next week and really don’t want to miss a deer becouse of hang fires!!

I gotta wonder if a reputable US factory wants to sell "seconds", esp. in this legal atmosphere nowadays. I mean, is there someone in the QC dep't. of an ammo company, saying, OK, these are 'seconds', lets pack 'em up for Wally World??

Where do people come up with this nonsense that Walmart only sells seconds? Their suppliers would have to build entire factories that produce nothing but seconds to supply their stores. You bought CCI products from Walmart, any defects were the fault of CCI. You could have had the same experience if you had bought them from your local gun shop.

one time I had a hang fire with Pdx . lasted 6 hours 12 minutes and 31 seconds then it finally went off :ghostly:

I had some issues with cci on my 50 cal MT rifle but not at all on my 45. Thought well maybe its the nipple so I ordered 2 from track of wolf that specifically mentioned cci in description. Got them put one on fired test caps, fired every time
