I've used WD-40 for decades as a water displacement/cleaning solvent. However, I have always followed two rules:
  • Keep it off the stock because it will dissolve any finish and harm the wood.
  • Always follow up with something to act as a rust preventative. In my case, I use Rig.

I've also used Windex for the same purpose, with the same rules.

I've used Fluid Film and found it to be an outstanding rust preventive/surface protector.
But it is almost like a wax when it dries. Therefore, I don't use it in the bore. I don't like the feel of the residual, either.
Instead, I use EezOx because it comes out so well in the corrosion tests.
