Well, how bad did i screw up my lube?

Was following the instructions for Stumpy's Moose Snot, but realized that I had half the castor oil for the recipe. No big deal, cut it in half. Except, I realized too late, that I put what is essentially twice the beeswax in the oil than was called for.

I was planning on using the patches for the shoot tomorrow, but I'm wondering the quality. Worst case, I used my store bought pre-lubed, and melt and remake the Moose Snot with more castor oil and oil soap.

If you're going to a match just use spit for a lube and don't worry about it. Other lubes are for hunting and you can shoot all day long with a gob of spit on the patch. If there is a delay between relays either load before the down time or wipe the barrel (I use spit for this) to keep the fouling from getting hard between relays. Don't over think things. Folks have been using spit patches forever.

The only concern is our extremely dry air here in Colorado. But I will give it a shot.

I suspect it will be thick to the point of being a paste. I would try it. It may work fine for warm weather.

Has it already solidified? If so, how solid or stiff is it?
Melt it and add some other oil, olive oil or neats foot oil would be my 1st choices.

If it is at all workable just try it. Remelt and redo at a later date..

Lube recipes aren't rocket science. If it doesn't work as you made it, go back and add the rest later and try again. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Just spit on your patch.

remember once cooled stir the lube the wax will separate slightly what I thought to be too hard smoothed out like a creamy paste wax works perfect as a patch lube , wood polish

Get it a bit too soft and it can double as a tasty dip for chips!

I go the easy route and buy my lubes. I can no longer rely on spit lube because I tend to be dry these days. I figure why go to all the trouble mixing up some lube when my tried and true ones work so well.

I’m always amazed at the questions of “lube” in regards to patching bullets or balls. If human saliva is adequate and will keep a rifle firing shot after shot any oil vegetable or animal must be a cut above. Just saying.

Some people have their mouths go dry, as has been reported by at least one member.
Some people want to do all their shooting with the same components all the time,,,, you know that whole consistency thing,,,, and are not going to hunt with spit patches. "So shall you train, so shall you fight (or hunt)."

I'm always amazed at how no matter what the question is about lube,,, the "just spit on it," crowd shows up enmasse..

Spit patch is so easy and works well. I’m beginning to fall into the dry mouth group though. Also I’ve used different lubes over the years for hunting where I knew the firearm was going to stay loaded for a time.
