What is the "popular" fowler right now?

Something 20 gauge, double, with + 30" barrels choked, flintlock, English straight grip stocked would be real popular with me  ; That's just me though.
O.

I'd say the most popular right now are the French Fusil de Chasse and early English trade style guns.

I'd have to say the French fusil in 20 gauge is #1, as many "semi-custom" companies produced or still produce some sort of copy of that gun, plus the India importers have them too. While we here in the USA have lots of options, in many of the European countries the India imports are seen in much larger numbers do to lack of choices.

NW Trade gun style guns are proably the next, in 20 gauge, as Pedersoli makes a "sorta trade gun" copy of the NW Gun...again European buyers boost the numbers.

Semi-custom English trade guns and "Carolina" guns, plus English fowlers follow (imho) in gauges of 28, 24, 20, 16 and 12.

finally the smooth rifles.

Is anyone making barrels in gauges larger (smaller number) than 10 ga? I'm not talking cannons, but shoulder fired stuff.

Yep, the Gun Works (Oregon Barrel) makes the following if you have a fat wallet:

8 Bore - $450
4 or 6 bore - $500, and,
2 bore - $600

All are tapered octagons up to 33", longer or octagon to round etc, is "custom", but they will make one.

I saw Tracks 4-bore English Sporting rifle when they had it for sale. It was so big it looked almost cartoonish and silly. I wonder if 6 and 8-bores look similarly.

20 gauge smoothbores are the most popular fowlers, including with me, generally IMO. For good reason. Did buy a 51" .69 Cookson as well as custom 12 Ga. 42" club butt fowlers this year so they're popular with me at the moment...

Thanks guys. I am going to start a new build soon (after the current build is done) and it will be a build to sell. I love building fusils so good news is good news! I'll probably do a fusil ordinaire or fusil fin.

"Popular" could be defined as what is made the most or what sells the most.
That's probably a 20 gauge.
myself, I an fond of the .28 gauge. But, what you intend to use it for makes a big difference and often influences the decision.
The .20 gauge is a nice middle of the road caliber but any fowler is better than no fowler.

I am into the construction of a 16ga 26" french fusil. I just installed the wedges into the barrel/stock tonight. Got a long way to go on it. Using a numrich unchambered barrel with 7/8 14 threads and breech plug. Those barrels ended up a bit larger than a regular 16ga so being sold reasonable. I will probably start on the lock next. A chambers tulle from tow.
