Hi folks

Most of us have one favourite hunting gun. I am curious to see what you consider as a back up gun in case your primary gun has a problem or you are just looking for variety.

My primary gun is a T/C new Englander .54 precussion and I back that up with a Pedersoli Frontier carbine flintlock in .45 cal.

however this will all change when my new .62 fowler arrives

cheers

Richard

I have been using my .50 Lyman Deerstalker for the past 14 years and never needed a back up, thank God. I now have a new .54 Lyman Trade rifle so now I have the Deerstalker for a back up. :winking:

My "back-up" gun is a 1911 stuck inside my belt, left side, under my coat :rotf:.

(Sorry- I just couldn't let that one pass without an off the wall comment :surrender: )

Right or wrong, I like similarity for ease of use, parts interchangeability, etc.
For example, when I got heavy into trap & skeet, all those guns are Renmington 1100 & 1187 in .410/.28/.20/.12 gauges.

Same with my muzzleloaders...I made the decision to stay with one model...all are TC Hawkens...and basically there are only three assemblies: Lock, stock, and barrel
So I can either swap a component, or just grab a different Hawken altogether...so far, never had to

Besides BP rifles I use C&B revolvers to hunt with also. I use my ROA mostly but sometimes a '58 Rem 'Bufflao' model with 12" barrel. I have taken wild hogs with both.

My Primary is my 50 Cal Full Stock Hawken.

If it is Raining, I will use my 58 Cal Renegade with the GM Barrel.

No matter what I carry, my Old Army goes along just in case there are Crow or Blackfeet about.

Primary shooter is the 45 cal. longgun that I just traded for, can't seem to miss any targets with it. Can't wait till deer season.

Backup is my 50 cal. cut down GPR.

Trout fishing pistolla is the 54 Lyman pistol, figure if I'm close it will take a hog or turkey come turkey season.

My primary is a .54 T/C Renegade. Spare rifle is the Cabela's .54 Hawken Hunter.

Primary is a .50 Pedersoli flintlock rifle. Fall back is a .50 Traditions Pioneer caplock rifle.
Pistol is a Traditions Trapper in .50.

Primary is whatever I took that trip! Usually a CVA Mountian rifle or a CVA Hawken. My backup is not just an incase the other breaks gun. It is a CVA Trapper combo gun. The 50 caliber barrel is sighted with in with Lee Target Minnies. The 12 guage barrel is backup in case the hunt has gone south for some reason! There is always something to do with the 12 guage along!

Primary is my .53 Santa Fe Hawken. Backup is Ruger Blackhawk .45 LC with blackpowder handloads. 270 gr Keith bullet over 40 grains of FFFg, the old Elmer Keith load. I can vouch that it will shoot end for end through a whitetail buck. I only carry backup when hunting in New Mexico.

My primary rifle has been a Cabela's Blue Ridge by Pedersoli in 45 cal. My backup is a TC Hawken percussion in 50 cal.

It depends, if I carryin' my Renegade Smoothy, my back up is a White Mountain Carbine, and vice versa. If I'm carryin' my .36 H&A "Buggy rifle" I don't need a backup, although a rabbit did charge me once. :rotf:

.54 Lehigh flinter made by John Donelson and my backup is a .50 New Englander percussion I assembled from a kit. On the really nasty rainy days I hunt with the New Englander. If needs be I have a .54 Renegade that doesn't get much play time anymore.

my main rifle is a smoothrifle in .54 cal made by E. Campbell,my backup rifle is a .54 Cal made by Gary Chappel made in a hawken style..

Flintlock is a Lyman DeerStalker with both .50 and .54 barrels. My back up :winking: is my Fedora recurve bow :shocked2: .
