Many years ago I studied in the shop of Ron Ehlert. He showed me a pretty foolproof way to get wedges installed. After doing a very CAREFUL layout on the outside of the forearm of where the underlugs were in the barrel channel he used a 1/16" bit to drill through the stock and lug a couple of times. He removed the barrel. Using a piece of 12" steel flat stock, one end of which was ground and filed about 4" to the exact size of the wedge, he heated up the steel piece cherry red and burned his way through the forearm area from both sides of the stock. Then he cleaned up the stock slot with a small file. Made it a perfect fit. There was some scorching of the wood but he did all this prior to any shaping of the forarm.

He then parked the barrel in his drill and used an end mill to open up the lug for the wedge.
Thanks! All info is greatly appreciated!

Went to Brierfield Ironworks State Park in Alabama to get started in N-SSA shooting
Got there and back alive. Arrived home & my red individual membership card had arrived.
The kepi & suspenders from C&C Sutlery were here.
My caps arrived.
Just waiting on the musket to arrive.

OH Yeah, forgot what i did this morning! Senior moment don't ya know! my .45 was getting low on food.
Looks like a busy day. I have Parkinsons' and Lewy Body moments all the time. When all cylinders are firing I'm as sharp as I ever was, but some days I'm just sitting around with a stupid look on my face.

Gonna try something different at the range next time I go. I made some inexpensive quick loaders from clear plastic tubing and dowels used for the bottom plug. Made them for .36, standard .44 and a bit larger for the Dragoon charges. The pre measured charge in the tube is capped by the round ball that easily comes off to drop the powder in the cylinder chambers. This will speed up things at the range.

Speaking of Briarfield Iron Works State Park, I have shot a lot of archery tournaments there, us muzzle loader guys always included picking up rifle range lead when we shot an archery tournament. Only b/p guns are allowed on the range so there was plenty of soft and wheel weight projectiles to be had. Before the berm was rebuilt a few years ago my buddy and I picked up 80# of lead in 1/2 hour.

When the berm was rebuilt 3 or 4 years ago the park manager picked up 1400# of lead, melted it down into ingots and sold it back to the clubs that shot at the range. He also banned lead scavenging by individuals. This manager moved on and the current one doesn't care if anyone picks up lead but the supply is not what it once was.

This was 120# at one time, all Briarfield lead.

Yep. These muzzleloaders are keeping my mind busy, so that helps. Thinking of taking one of my percussion guns out to test a batch of powder when it gets dark.
