I took a trip to the backside of my property down to the creek with the notion of finding a new flint rock(s) for fire making with a steel. The flint I used very successfully 30 years ago when I was last involved in “buckskinning” is a bit worn down and skinny.

I found a good’un….

Just hope I can break it down into about three or four pieces without killing it altogether. It sparks great!

I couldn’t insert a video, so I screenshot a frame of the one I took giving it a few whacks.

Also cut some saplings to use for tent poles in the future. The heat today cut that short. I was fading.

Worked in the nice, cool air conditioned shop cleaning up and polishing the rest of the Woodsrunner hardware. Cut deeper rings in the ram rod pipes and put a nice mirror polish on the trigger arm and I’ll do the same to the sear. It’s dangerously hot outside.

That really cool, all I find at the creek (bayou) is mud and cottonmouths.

Both yesterday and today I spent time at the Kempton Gun maker's Fair. Saw some good seminars, got lessons and hands on experience knapping a few Gun flints, met some fine folks, saw some old friends, and got some great advice on two locks.
I look forward to this event all year long. I'm already looking forward to next year.

Went out in the heat to work at the club's work day. After the range was fully prepared for out next match, the black powder silhouette targets were placed on the range for a bit of shooting at the silhouettes. I did hit a few of the targets so I didn't fully embarrass myself. More importantly, I let my stock dry for the Kennedy rifle rebuild. Should have some pictures of the rifle all put together. It's beginning to look like a rifle I want to shoot.

A friend grew some flax, so I am starting the process of making tow. So far I have discovered it is labor intensive, and fermented flax stinks!
I progressed down to where it is usable for gun cleaning or tinder. I think if a person would buy flax seed at the health food store, they could grow enough in a bucket to give their self several years worth.

Wow! You've got some nice flint there, if your up to it I'd send you some cash for a couple of big ones like that?

Hi Bob, how does it turn out using varnish, never tried that? I've used varnish for other things, makes the wood a lot stouter (model airplanes) but never tried it as a finish.
I sometimes use a thin shellac or a Wiping Varnish. Not a lot but enough to seal it, (particularly if I use a water based dye). Then I like to apply paste wax for a great finish and added protection.
This is how I finished my Sparrow Pistol after applying BLO to enhance the wood.
