Barrel day.

Removed the Wal-Mart crown. Cut 45s on the muzzle and dimpled that thing. Pucker time to be sure.

Cut two dovetails and installed two tenons. Went over the entire barrel with 150 grit. 150 leaves some tooth for the browning solution.

Cut a small flat on the drum so the nipple has a place to rest. Plus it just looks more finished.

Shaped and softened the edges on the front and read sights.

Went back to a project that I hadn't worked on in weeks. Almost forgot where I was at. Anyway, drilled for the barrel pins on an old CVA Kentucky 45 kit that I acquired a couple years back. Went just fine until I broke a needle file off while elongating the pin hole in the lug. Tomorrow is another day.

I had the honor of giving a 6th grade group a tour of what life was like here in KY in 1787. Told them about George Mefford, the builder of the cabin and how harsh life was here back then. Below is one of the 2 groups. All of the kids wanted to hold the guns. I just don't have enough of them to go around...LOL I love doing this stuff...

Not today but yesterday,my kids was home,it's been 4 or 5 years since my son in New York, and my Daughter in Los Angeles both been home at same time so we had 2 caplock rifles out,the Ruger Old Army, and little .69 bore cannon, there was several lbs of lead slung downrange 2 or 3 lbs of powder burned up,plus several boxes of suppository type ammo,on top of that a few crossbow bolts got busted or lost, the kids their significant others and my wife had it sounding like a battlefield behind house for several hours,I had 5 shooters making smoke for 5 or 6 hours straight I just kept bringing ammo and loading the black powder guns,I never fired a shot but was one of the best shooting sessions I ever had, they was still burning powder after dark, one would stand behind shooter with flashlight so they could see sights, and i painted couple steel plates white and they was still ringing steel after dark, and doing quite well made dad proud.😁

Once guns put up,beer and wine came out, fire built and I had 2 dutch ovens going, made a loaf of bread in one,and mixed squash, taters, onions in other dutch ovens while they grilled burgers and braughts.

Thanks @TDM it was,it was actually first time my daughter in law ever fired a gun,she did extremely well and caught on very quickly, her handgun form left a little to be desired but I can't argue with success,my son hadn't shot anything since they got married and moved to NY 13 years ago and he got back in the groove quick,my daughter took awhile which surprised me she was always my shooting Buddy her,and her boyfriend come out and shoot some every time they come back from Los Angeles couple times a year, don't matter a great time was had by all and they all was ringing steel regularly after a few shots.

Joined a cult today… Ordered a Kibler SMR quick-ship fancy maple (little streak on butt behind the cheek rest), .40 cal. Will be my first flintlock.

Now I need a good vice! (Actually, I already have a few vices)
Welcome to the cult... errr... club! I have the same setup and was my first flintlock, too. It's a lot of fun to shoot and the Rice barrel will surprise you with its accuracy.

Get'n there.

Tenon slots inletted and tenons drilled.

Pushed the belly back an inch. Thinned the fore stock and cut a little ramrod entry detail. Laid out the pipes.

Homemade rusting solution slathered all over the steel parts. Starts working within minutes. Will be rusted by tomorrow morning.

Ordered some Trans-Tint wood dye. Dark Vintage Maple. Should look nice with browned barrel and bits.

PS: 2 hours in.....RUST!

Welcome to the order of the SMR. Anointed with Ballistol and a place for you on the ship when your time comes but be sure to bring plenty of powder and lead to our new planet lol!

Seriously you're going to love you new kit! Look into a pattern makers vise.
