I didn't exactly burn any BP but I bought a pair of period wool union soldier pants with the yellow stripe down the outside of each leg, bought a nice period pullover cotton shirt, and bought a new holster for my 1858. The holster is really outstanding, the revolver fits really well in this one. The wife took one look at me dressed in my stuff and says, "You're too old to play Cowboys and Indians." I gave her a 6'-1" raspberry. 😛

Some friends brought a couple intersting bp guns out the club the other day and I got to check them out and shoot them. One was a Ferguson breech loading rifle, I've never seen anything like it and that was way cool.

You'll need to do a little reading of your own history to learn more about the Ferguson breechloading flintlock rifle. Was it made recently or was it an original?

No projects on the bench now so I decided to make a dandy little powder horn today.

Right now I'm taking a break from casting up a reasonable amount of fodder for my Musketoon, and the very slightly bigger Miniés for a pal's original Springfield. He has allergies to just about everything, and casting bullets is way outside his comfort level. Thankfully, he is not allergic to the smoke from burning the Holy Black, nor to paying me for my trouble by way of lots of lead - usually a couple of hundred pounds at a time. His son is a legal building specialising in restoring older historical ecclesiastical structures, long-time targets in this country from the attentions of the 'travelling people' whose avowed intent seems to be the removal of as much church-roof leading as possible before detection. It's interesting to see that in the recent past a sales 'certificate of disposal' has been compulsory at legitimate scrap metal yards, thus preventing them from benefitting from their roof-top exertions.

This is our local church - roofed with around 700 tons of lead, much of it still medieval. Nice, eh?

Spent the day cleaning and oiling the ML rifles, and looking over my California rifle, that a very fat old guy fell on and broke the stock and trigger guard. Trigger was lost in the confusion. Lock is percussion by Davis I think.
Also worked on a horn, making the usual mess. Joy!

Did you and your smoke pole do any good in the woods?
Unfortunately no. Didn’t see a thing. Goofed around this morning and missed my chance on a small doe. Shooting sticks slipped and she caught me moving. Public land deer ain’t hanging around to figure out what something is. She hit high gear and was gone.

Finally got around to replacing the eye sore of a touch hole on my "southern rifle" along with being an eye sore it didn't like to seal up well when cleaning either plugging the hole or using a flush tube. its going to take some tinkering to get the patina to match up. most likely I'll just need a good bit of range time and just a touch of "neglect" in cleaning around the lock

We've finally had rain and our range reopened today with a turkey shoot. I went home empty-handed for the first time but we all had a great time except for a period of silence followed by a round from my cannon in remembrance of one of our favorite shooters who succumbed to the crud since the last time we all got together. A few folk also took the opportunity to shoot the Pedersoli 20 including a young man of ten who thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever done considering this was his first time out at a range. He acquitted himself well with my .22 pistol and rifle.
