What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

What I did today? I made another knife. The blade is High Carbon RR Spike, 7 inches long. The handle is Moose Leg Bone. The sheath is commercial tanned 8oz. cow hide, hand sown with a saddle stitch. Semper Fi.

Somehow appeals to my Neanderthal DNA. Only one bevel? I always thought that would be the way to make a patch knife, but this one look to be a more serious knife... something I should take on my mammoth hunt later today.

It has warmed up to six degrees as of this morning. I swear I saw a woolly mammoth out there at the edge of the property before the sun came up. Might just take a .54 out there and look for tracks later on. Anybody recommend a load for wooly mammoths? I think mammoth hide would make for some good possibles bags.

Save the tusks and teeth. I know a guy who makes pistol grips from them. You will have to let us know what mammoth tastes like.

Woke up and temp was 12 degrees. with a "feel Like" temp of Minus -2 !!!! In South Carolina!

I'm from NC, Wilson County. Winters are still warmer than they were in the 50's and 60's.

Went woolly mammoth hunting. Took my "Yellow Bird gun" with the 12" .50 caliber former Grey Hawk barrel. 7 grains 3f Old Eynsford, 30 grains Triple 7 under a sabotted 240 grain .45 caliber Hornady XTP. Thought a jacketed bullet was warranted for woolly mammoth. 6 degrees F temperature with a 25 MPH wind for a wind chill of -13 F. Had a military surplus parka with a field jacket liner. Wasn't enough.

Didn't see a mammoth. Bummer. Then again the load might not have been sufficient for an animal in the four to six ton weight class.

In lieu of woolly mammoth, shot milk jug filled with water from the back porch. One shot, one kill. I thought it a good shot if I do say so myself. Jug blew into a snow drift and is now covered up completely.

Next hunt might be for a saber-toothed cat. I hear they are in season next week.

pressure is still on here. i took a quick break from working and rang the steel. still living in the tiny house up on the hill and throwing my hawk on my morning walk or ski to the privy. every morning I ski a loop before work. View attachment 184804

Today my son and I made 40 live round paper cartridges for our Euroarms Mississippi rifles. Used .530 round balls with patching wrapped around the ball and tied, paper cartridge tubes and 50 grains of 2F powder. Then bundled 20 rounds and put those in the bottom of the tin and placed 20 loose rounds in the upper compartment of the tin. Had a good time with my son, talking and listening to Christmas music.

Used a coarse diamond stone to take the hump off a flint. Just curious to see how that would go.

Finished cleaning up a TC .54 Hawken barrel and rib today. It was pretty grubby, beat up, and a lot of finish gone so I sanded it and reblued it today. Turned out pretty nice. Vast improvement over how I got it.

Changed the sights on my fullstock flint Hawken to a tall rear full buckhorn and tall front silver blade. Now I get to sight it in this week.

Being it’s Christmas and such…I loaded my muzzle with an excellent meal…
I then reloaded with 88 grs (by volume per forkful) of various cakes, pies, traditional cookies and nibblins….It became obvious that it was time to wet the bore…down the muzzle I poured a warm shloshing of Bailey’s moose joose…and I’m gonna lett’er soak overnight.
