What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

It's kind of related. sitting down for a minute before I go teach a hunters safety class to around thirty students. part of my class includes an uncasing activity where I have 5 to 8 guns cased on the table and I have a volunteer come up and uncase one. they tell me and the group what it is and identify the parts and features of the gun, safety, lever, hammer etc. we continue this until all the guns are uncased. I have included a Hawken and an inline this go around. maybe I can light that spark and get one or two interested.

When you say it took 2 caps to set off the gun do you mean you changed out the first cap for another cap? Or do you mean you had to hit the first cap twice? If you had to hit the cap twice the cap is a little small for the nipple. To fix that chuck the nipple in a drill and file the side of the cone down a little and check a cap for fit, stop when it fits. Replacing the nipple will work if the new nipple is a little smaller. I mean I pulled the trigger, the cap fired but nothing else. I had to put a second cap on the nipple and it finally fired. Had the same thing happen 3 times.

JamesA, is it possible you are pushing fouling into the patent breech when cleaning? Also when you clean it do you pull the barrel and use water pumped through the barrel with the nipple removed with your ramrod and patch. Those darn patent breeches need to be clean and free of oil. You might run a bit of rubbing alcohol through the barrel followed by a dry patch before you start a shooting session. That helps make sure there isn’t any oil in that small breech.

I cut two more slabs off one the maple logs I have in my back yard. That's all I had energy for. They appear to have some curl. I'll work on some more tomorrow. I need to trim the three boards I have done and seal the end grain.

I'm not sure what you're suggesting. When I shoot I'm looking out of the top of my lenses, which is the distance portion. I can't see the front sight. I need to be looking at the midrange portion of the lens to see at 40ish inches.

Sometimes, it can be as simple as having the nose piece adjusted in or out to raise or lower where you look through the lense.

Fixed a forearm that was chiseled poorly and cracked , cut out a buttplate from brass sheet , drew three side plate out on brass to be cut out tomorrow , fit a trigger I made to the trigger slot then drilled and pinned it , working now , wire wheeled a 40" barrel , heated it and applied browning solution , hung it ...removed a NW trigger guard , wire wheeled it and the heat and browning solution .....hung . Cleaned out a 24 ga. barrel I proofed a couple days ago then polished the inside of it . Found bad spot on #2 pin on a trade gun being rebuilt , made a plug and glued it in , let it cure tomorrow redrill it and pin it .Forged a section of old file flat and wide , going to half sole another frizzen

Today we had a local boy scout troop come to the range as part of their camp out experience. They were working on their shooting merit badge ad we helped with the muzzleloading part. Limited to percussion guns only. It was a good day and the scouts and associated adults had a good experience.

Met and joined the local group, bought some powder. Cleaned the yuck out of the smokepole, made my home office smell like Hoppes #9. Started on a TotW order. All in all, it's been a great day.

Had several things on todays list:

1. made a few flints from chert
2. made some jute tow
3. made a turn screw from an eye screw (yeah, it’s stainless, but I didn’t feel like firing up the forge)
4. made a vent pick from a piece of wire
5. changed the plugs and adjusted straps on a couple of horns
6. cleaned out and adjusted a shooting bag
7. checked the bore of my flintlock Tower pistol (it was good)
8. checked the bore of my percussion Kentucky rifle (it was good)
9. filled a horn with black powder

Opening day for Turkey here in Kentucky. No luck locating a Gobler but it was a beautiful morning to be out in the woods. I spent the afternoon doing some target shooting.

Spent a little bit of time today working on my Chambers PA Fowler! I decided to make it into a standing breach with a hooked breach plug. I had started this process over a month ago and just spent some time getting back to it today. I’ve reached a point where I’m just not sure where I should be taking more material off to make it fit!

Today I added holders for my short starters to the straps of my shooting pouches. These will be handy when shooting woods walks.

Tonight I peer pressured a shooting buddy into buying a .45 caliber T/C Seneca that was listed on Track of the Wolf.
