Spent a wonderful couple of hours working with youngest grandson on his first outing with the .50 Traditions Deer Hunter. We started out at 30 yards (pictured) to make sure we could find what the gun was doing and what he was doing with the gun! LOL Turns out we didn't need to be concerned about all that. Photo shows first five shots 50 gr. Pyrodex and .490 ball cast with Lee molds and lead pot (which grandson watched and learned). We took this on out to 75 yards and things begin to get a bit squirrely...sights were adjusted a bit high, but we took care of that and got him back in 2 MOA of white tail engine room. Tomorrow we clean and install a canvas web sling ... and get all the tools he'll need to care and feed the smoke pole.

One of the best things about today was he did the loading, stock whacking, and capping himself... so the muscle memory and ritual of preparing for consistent loads and ignition is well underway.
A great day, for sure. Good shooting young fella. That look on your face at the target: You looked like the cat who got the cream!👍

Well I was just sitting here and a big fat squirrel 35 yards away on the lawn was sitting there upright showing his white belly

My un mentionable pcp 22 just went off , it ran 10 ft and expired. Still working on my 8bore , getting there.

Just fried sardines on patio , delicious

Love from nr London , it’s very hot here. Ha h

If anyone is envious of the pool it cost £300 to build back in 1986 when we moved in. Kids from everywhere dug the hole 5 ft Deep and 15 ft dia. Lined it with steel mesh then the kids through handfuls of cement ( 1 ton of cement and 4 tons sand ) at the sides and trowel sort of smooth , I just filled it up on our new water meter , £75 for water???????? Oh dear I am a poor pensioner. But money well spent wife says fill it in , but she just had a cold swim, need a bore hole, but on London clay ????

See you

A grandson popped in to work on his knife project so it turned into a productive morning. He got a first coat of finish on his and I put the finishing touches on these four patch knives. Will do sheaths when I get that round tuit.

Left to right osage -oak and bamboo- bocote and spectra ply.

You are making great progress TDM! I haven't made it past the doodling stage yet. Great to see your 'progress' pictures. Gives me hope!
Thanks, but still a long ways from where I need to be. You should go ahead and take the plunge. What I’m trying to accomplish now is getting my hands used to moving with the shapes and trying different chisels to see what works best. So the sooner you start the sooner your hands will learn. I’ve ordered a relief carving DVD that I hope will help. There’s probably a number of things I’m doing wrong now that are complicating things. Still don’t plan on trying anything fancy on the real stock, but just play carving is starting to be fun.

I haven't figured it out yet , I am hoping to be stable at 300-350 grains but I have heard miné balls have problems skipping rifling in big bores, I will let you know when it all works out.
I bet you’ll never have to worry about folks bothering you wanting to shoot your rifle! I know it would be too much pain for me, but I still think it’s great.
