I've had this old CVA 45 cal Kentucky kit on hand for a while so I put some time in on it today mainly removing wood from the outer forearm. It's noticeably lighter now. In order to get the bulk out the nose cap needs to be reduced to match so it's a little wood here some brass there and repeat.

I was originally going to give this to one of my granddaughters but then decided that she should have a 50 caliber in case of an elk hunt. So, when this one is done it will go on the block.

Meanwhile it's a relaxing project.

A narrative, forged by the westerly wind! I went to the local range this morning, where the wind normally comes from the east, moving across the target from left to right. Not this morning; the exact opposite was happening, blowing strong from the west at the start and dropping right off over the three hours I was there. Why three hours to shoot 13 shots? I was helping some new members set up their combos, getting their shots on paper. Anyhow, as you can see, the 50-metre target tells what the wind was doing - the last four shots finding the bull. I used the same central hold throughout. My Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken really shoots nicely with a .530 home cast dead soft round ball, a .018 square cut pillow ticking patch, a lubed over powder wad and 60gn of Wano true black. Tom A Hawk's peep sight (forum member) sure aids my 66-year-old eyes, making the front sight sharp and defined.

Kindest regards, Pete

We started residing the bunkhouse today. Lots of work, lots of sun. On a water break I challenged my son to a shoot-off.

62 smoothbore, 65 gr 3F, powder card, .61 ball with another powder card (my usual load). 30yards offhand, on a swinging water bottle on a string. He took the first shot, and missed which was a mistake, because by the time the gun was reloaded, the bottle had half as much movement. My first try. Exploded.

Then, he suggested I shoot first at remaining bottle cap left hanging. I walked up on it to 20 yards and suggested it was a grouse head and totally destroyed it. He just walked away and said, “ I can’t beat that.” While I’d normally feel sorry, beating anyone like that, he is a wicked shot and his eyes are way better than mine, he is stronger and potentially smarter. He kicks my a** in archery, so I felt comfortable enough to gloat for a minute. He is a great sport.

No pictures of shooting this time but one of our siding project for posterity.

Dinner was Pork tenderloin fajitas over the fire. Post after dinner whiskey and sipping ginger tumerick tea before bed.
Life is good.

Some time ago I wanted to try to etch some steel, it was so simple , in fact I etched up to 1/8” deep , so be careful it works fast , I painted a 3” bar of very clean steel and scratched away where it was to be etched , to a 12 v battery I clipped on my bar and other bit of steel , +&- cannot remember which way. The solution was just strong salty water , it was minutes not hours , with battery charger on very impressed A friend said can I have it for a pendant Done

Sitting under umbrella it’s raining 17 miles west of London

Enjoy

Did your Hawken come from Pedersoli with that stock, or did you upgrade it after the fact? Shore is purdy…

and, Good Shootin’, Tex!

Sorry, That looks a tidy workshop , tried moving into kitchen shed one cold winter, I like it but stuff continually falls on me and the floor , it did not help adding two engraving machines a few months back, a tidy workshop has no charisma. Big shed is 30ft by 20ft , bottom of garden, cold full of junk. But I use my big lathe often

Still rebuilding the 1862 8g shotgun , £156 at Holts auction, new walnut stock , I added a brass block , but the plug is a steel stud 3/4” BSF , it’s only a wall hanger so don’t get excited

I wish you all well. Do I shoot at 80 , Yes an unmentionable 177&22 bsa Scorpio , police took away my shotguns , but left my antique guns , but they have to be wall hangers , better say no more !!!!!!!

Today I tried some home made caps on my sidelock. When I tried them on a percussion revolver I noticed that they weren't as powerful as CCI or RWS caps, and sure enough, they don't have enough power to ignite powder in a sidelock rifle without first priming the nipple with some 4Fg. The next time I make a batch I'll put more priming compound in each cap.

It's always fun to experiment and learn something new.

I shot the parts of the Boulder Valley Sportsman's Association woods walk course that weren't too overgrown. It was pretty dang hot so I made sure to bring a canteen with me.
