I got a package in the mail today. Ordered lead from @Justin.44 on Thursday, and Saturday it was here! Quick shipping, and the lead looks great. 45 pounds in a Medium Flat Rate Priority Mail box. *The powder can was just a handy thing I had close by I could grab to show the scale of the little ingots. They're the perfect size if I want to melt them over a campfire with a cast iron ladle I have in my plunder... They were a lot smaller than I had envisioned them, based on the photo he showed with the bathroom scale in his classified. But, nevertheless, 45 pounds is 45 pounds!

And I found the lead INSIDE my mailbox! I hope the mailman didn't hurt his back putting it inside there.

I do have a rather substantial mailbox and post... I always knew I'd have a good reason for overbuilding it!

Used up all my .595s yesterday, but, low and behold, the round ball fairy showed up and I'm back in business today. Thanks to our very own Justin44 for the lead supply. I'm getting too old to be pouring ingots too. Now to see If there is enough time left to send these down range today. 🤠

Glad it got there quick! Yeah the ingots always look bigger in the pictures, I've noticed that too. Out of all the boxes of lead I've shipped, I believe that's the first one to actually be put inside a mailbox! Back when I would make each box 65-69 lbs there were some disgruntled mailmen that would just throw it in the middle of the yard or in the driveway and one time they set it on top of a brand new car. Good thing you made that so sturdy! Thanks for the shout-out!

Here's two sentences I didn't expect to word process today:

Nice balls, Kevin. Nice balls!

Did your Hawken come from Pedersoli with that stock, or did you upgrade it after the fact? Shore is purdy…

and, Good Shootin’, Tex!
Terrier, thanks for your interest. I ordered the Hawken from Pedersoli Australia. We are very fortunate here to have a great importer and Pedersoli representative, Roger Mowbray, a wonderful fellow. When I ordered the Hawken, I asked for a maple stock, then pushed my luck for a special order with a blued barrel rather than the usual 'plum brown' offered by Pedersoli (I prefer a blue finish). Roger said he would see what he could do, and behold, six months later he rang to say it had been shipped. I sure like the rifle. Way too heavy for a competition gun; over three rounds of thirteen shots I'm knackered! There, I use my Tryon rifle, also in 54. Makes for casting one ball size :).

The Tryon is walnut and exhibits some attractive grain too.

That Tryon is a looker, too!

I took the smoke poles out to the range today. A young lady, very intrigued, asked me if she could video me loading and shooting my 54. She explained she was a middle school history teacher and wanted it to show her students. I suggested she load and shoot it and her husband video it. She did a great job and when the rifle fired, much to my relief, she was smiling ear to ear and said “that was so cool “. And it was.

God answered my prayers and it rained a 1inch of rain so only had to pick the vegetables in the garden. It was a good day to shoot. Got out my 50 cal TC Hawken rifle first black powder gun I bought around 1980. I take a cleaning patch and run it in and out several times then load up. I use Pryodex RS that I bought over 20 years ago, bought on clearance maybe 10 or more bottles. Bore butter that just as old for everything,Patch lube swabbing ect. Use .495 lead balls with .15 thick patches, 60grains of powder. Fired two shoots at 25 yards to see it still shooting like I want . Rest of shooting was at 50 yards. This load put a ball through a 2 inch book then went through the 1inch plywood behind it. Then shot 3 bullingpins that put a good dent in them. That's my deer hunting gun and load. 50 yards and under is the most distance I'll usually need. That gun has always loved a patch round ball. Never moved the rear sights once. Even my wife could but that ball down there with out moving the sights. After cleaning with soap and water I'll blow down the barrel with my portable air compressor. Then run a lubed with Bore Butter patched down several times and put away for next time.

Fixing on a flint lock today. Here's taking .008" off of a bridle so the fly and tumbler don't drag when the screws are tight.
