Thanks, I did endeavor to persevere and did some more. But I sure would hate for that to end up on my Woodsrunner stock. Long ways the go.
I think your carvings continue to improve with every new sample! As your muscle memory continues to develop you will keep getting better. I ran into the same situation carving leather. My first attempts were not anything I want to show anybody, but I continued to practice to where it started to become more of a natural skill and I learned how to correct/fix mistakes, but it has taken me a few years to get to where I am and I still have a lot to learn. Enjoy the learning process and at some point you will feel comfortable carving on your $500 stock!

I was thinking about trying relief carving on my Colonial and Woodsrunner kits, but after practicing a little on scrap I decided I want to shoot my rifles sooner than I will develop the skill to carve them, so they will remain relatively plain this time.😎

Thanks @garypl, I swear I’ve been watching videos and looking at more photos than I can count, but I’m still making my cuts wrong and it screws the whole design up. I’ll keep working at it but I doubt my current Woodsrunner stock will see anything but the bare minimum. No sense in messing up pretty wood.

That's better than I have ever shot [green monster in me] Polecat
That was shot from the bench, Polecat, bag at the back, rest at the front. I sometimes pull some surprising targets off-hand, though very rare, not my forte :). When hunting, I always use a rest of some sort.

Nice little gun. The owner of my gun range gave me this gun for an assessment. His Grandfather hunted with it and had taken several deer. He evidently took good care of the gun. But then it was neglected in his later years and after his death The triggers and lock needed only a mild cleaning and adjustment. The nipple and bolster screw were a challenge to remove requiring some soaking and torch heat. Replaced the bolster screw and am waiting on a new nipple. The bore initially looked pretty rusted but after a couple of days soaking with PB Blaster, wire brushing and scouring with scotch pads it might just shoot pretty good and am looking forward to range day and returning it to it's owner. .50cal Traditions, 24" barrel. Nice light gun that could be fun.

I have got too much ££££$$ on my credit card and just added another £760 holts auction
I got the 1833 percussion heavy barrel rifle , It is around 577 but the riffling has been drilled out , so nobody was bidding. Lucky me oval riffling could be impressive , but 6 groves would look better. Who knows be three weeks before it arrives in the post
Happy now , well It was till my wife demanded she cut my hair, hate haircuts .
She was a hairdresser that’s why she’s thin I guess. Yes that’s me at 80 and the wife in the sun

THe one L&R lock I have took a lot more than that to become serviceable.

Strange I have two spare L&R flintlocks , never used in anger. , but gone a bit rusty so I gave them a soak in rust remover, but the main springs just fell in two. Strange never happened before. Sent a note to L&R ?!!!!

Sounds good. A new gun, hair, and a wife at 80.

Bollocks. Hope I am aloud to say that. I don’t like buying good guns , they are seldom that good after 175 years. Went for £1100 plus 30% buyers commision. A tatty one went for £400. Holts put on a sealed bid auction at end of month. There’s another .41 Swiss ml there might have a punt on that £?!!!! ???? It looks genuine in photos One with loads of engraving Need to somehow pay off

New meaning new to you. Good that it brings pleasure to you. Enjoy!

Sort of related…

Found out today, courtesy of my daughter and her interest in genealogy, that I am a direct descendant of a pretty famous wagon train that went from Missouri to Oregon in 1851. My paternal relative, a great great (?) grandfather, was the wagon master for a large group and his rifle is in the Oregon Historical Museum. Apparently, they went back to Missouri again to bring more cattle and family back to Oregon. Obviously, there has to be more to the story.

Chances are, I’ll be looking for that rifle.
