Never quit when you think you have an idea, though!
I toyed with different ideas and it struck me to go back to an old approach and use a series of panels to incorporate various designs on this horn, which I think will work. I want it to be more varied than just a nice hunting scene, which can be kinda hum-drum.
That horn will be a dandy! I’m trying to convince myself I “need” another horn now…

First coat of stain on the Colonial. Tomorrow I adjust color and maybe try AF over the stain with a heavy rub back. Trying to get the curl to stand out but maintain a honey/amber background.

I think you're on the right track with AF and rub back, then dye it again. It's stunningly beautiful the way it is but I know the look you're after and it isn't quite that yet. Try a spot in the barrel channel first, red and yellow make orange you know and if it doesn't rub back evenly it will look like flames.

Discussion of God or religion on this board leaves a good opportunity for derisiveness as I believed there are some very stiff necked people of either side here. Like was said discussion of the simple flint can be problematical.

After 20 hours of designing, erasing, scratching and inking, I have finished engraving my “Hunter Horn” (#53). Next will be to add color to it.

I’m not nearly as well versed in muzzle loading as many of you are but how do you tell a Rice barrel from GM or any other maker just from a picture?
Depends on the picture! A close up shows markings a shot (pun there) at distance wouldn't tell for me. :dunno:

It's hard to screw up a Kibler Woodsrunner. I'm sure it has been and will be done, but so far I don't think I have.

I made a solid wood jewelry box for my wife years ago from some feathercrotch cherry. It's heart shaped and I centered it in the crotch grain to catch the pattern. Cut a profile, sectioned it, milled out the cavities with integral partitions, and the underside of the lid. It warped a little but that grain and color is like no other.

Not a rice barrel. It's a an unchambered, unfinished 24-gauge cartridge Belgian double gun blank that I finished out on my lathe and milled the octagon, breeched, and reamed. RobM uses a lot of them for his smaller trade guns.

Ian them little barrels are good shooters for sure.😀 I know I sure like mine .

Got out this morning for a little squirrel hunt, but ended up being a woods walk and target practice. Using my deerhunter with 25 gr 3f scheutzen, home cast 480 round balls, home made flint using chert. Pretty accurate at 25 yards using this setup. No complaints from me!

Shot the Harper's Ferry today. Still trying to figure out how to aim this thing. But great fun confounding downwind bench shooters with great clouds of black powder smoke. Unfortunately, confounds me, too, as I have no spotter and can't see where I'm hitting because of the same smoke. Oh, well, all part of the fun, I suppose.
