I'm thinking there must be something that can be applied to aluminum to blacken it. If not black, what other options?

Mix 4 tbsp. of black anodizing dye with 2 quarts of distilled water. Submerse the piece of aluminum in the dye solution for 15 minutes. Heating the dye solution to around 100 degrees Fahrenheit will help to make the dye adhere better.

Get it at Amazon or your local gun store.

FWIW: the anodizing die will probably only work properly on a freshly anodized workpiece rather than a previously finished, worn or polished piece. The Birchwood-Casey aluminum blacking solution will work on any aluminum surface, so long as the instructions are followed.

I've used the Birchwood Casey Alumablack product quite a bit on unmentionable pistol parts.
It works very well, but, can be worn off in high wear areas or with abrasive contact. Very easy to touch up though.

Thanks for the responses. I haven't decided which way to go yet but its going to be one of the above solutions. :thumb:

I scratched an AR receiver one time. Birchwood Casey's Aluminum black touched it right up.
