Vern,
I made a second spring from stock right away so I would have one if I broke the original while afield. :blah: I try to make sure I have it along when I go to shoot. Did the actual link break or did the pin pull out?
God bless.

bookie,
I don't know what the sear spring looks like on your lock so I can't tell for sure. But I think that since your springs are not hardened, you could just reshape them until everything fits together. I know you can do it Bookie!
God bless.

After dressing the pan and plate, I cleaned up and polished the pan cover and arm, and drilled the pivot hole in the arm. I used a wood clamp to hold the assembled pan cover in place and center punched for the pivot hole. I thinned out the pan cover spring for my lock also because it was too stiff. If you fit the mainspring and primary sear first, you can cut and fit the end of the sear spring. On the German covered lock, I tapered the end of the spring so it would slide into place against the mainspring. I haven't seen or worked wih the Dutch wheellock kit, so I'm not sure how it is configured.

The top link broke where it pins into the wheel shaft. I intended to make a new chain out of spring stock anyway, just not this soon ;)

I have the parts for a second one. We'll have to see ;) Got a chance to try out the new chain yesterday and it works fine. I'll take a photo of the inside and post it later.

Volat' & Vern, I sent the springs for my Dutch rifle lock to TRS for their free hardening and tempering service (since I have one of their locks). Are these folks always a bit on the slow side? Cheers, Bookie

My only experience with them has been to order two wheellock kits and both arrived in a couple of weeks. That's a bit slower than some folks I've delt with, but not too bad.

Bookie, old boy,
The only thing I ordered from them came in about six weeks, which I thought was good. But there have been some real horror stories posted here. I hope yours won't be one of them.
God bless.

Gentlemen! Thanks for the info, but I am not ready to think I'm involved in a horror story. The lock kit is horrors enough. (I am begining to think it would have better to start with the German styled lock kit instead though.) My biggest problem is that I know nothing about wheellocks and it does take quite a bit of study (read trial and error) in order to get the parts to work properly. But good ol' perserverance will get me to where I want to be.....someday. (Glad I know someone who has a welder.) Cheers, Bookie

Vern & Volat', got my springs from TRS and are they beautiful! Only problem is, they kept my pan cover arm retaining spring and sent me a big German sear spring in it's place. It has been returned. Took me about 20 minutes of serious thinking to get that big ol' spring in place, on the chain and the bridle screwed in position. Figured how to make a big spring vise for this critter. It should make the vise grips, water pump pliers, and machinist vise combination tool a thing of the past. Wish me luck. Cheers, bookie

Yes, the big mainsprings can be a bit of a challenge! I modified a "C" clamp to work with the primary sear block for my rifle lock (Photos are posted under "Got Sparks?"). Glad to hear you got them back in a reasonable amount of time. Where are the pictures of your project? ;)

Bookie,
You got to post your pictures at photobucket or somesuch other place and then post them here from there. Do a search on the site here for 'posting pictures' or 'how to post a picture' Of course the gents here could join Muzzleloadermag and see them there!
God bless.

Leon, I guess that leaves me out. It's all Greek to me. Looks like Muzzlemag site will have to do for now. Might get some photos taken tomorrow morning. Cheers, Bookie

Fellers, Got my pan cover arm spring back from TRS today. Now if I can just figure out where in the Sam Hill that arm gets located. Made a spring vise from a "C" clamp after Vern's suggestion. Seems to work well. This work is frustrating, but then again, it's fascinating. Kinda like a puzzle, you know? Cheers, Bookie
