I do not remember seeing one of these before. It is a wheellock but there is no appearant way to wind it. An automatic wheellock?

I think it was Razpla who posted a couple of similar locks. The action of rotating the pyrite into place cocks the piece.

Is there a reason why it is backwards? Sorry for not including the question. It just dawned on me. There are a few more photos of museum objects at that site. Forgive my ignorance. I am just curious.

The most common reason for backwards dog was because there was another lock, the right way around, for either superposed loading or over-under double barrel.

I think this one though might be to make it easier to pull back the dog and span the lock.
