What are the wheels called for grinding humps off flints and who carries them?

It will have to be a diamond imbedded wheel, such as designed for grinding & polishing gemstones. They can be had to fit in a Dremel Tool.

For myself, back in the day when I did this, I used a 6" × 2" diamond flat stone, or whetstone. A medium grade/grit will do the trick. Purchase the plastic whetstone holder that raises the plate above your working surface. I placed the medium grit stone in the holder in a shallow plastic tub that I filled up with water to a level just below the surface of the diamond plate. That way I could keep sweeping water across the stone as I worked to flatten the humps on flints that were going to be a problem keeping tight in the jaws of the cock. I fabricated a little hardwood clamp assembly with a handle that I used to both keep my fingers away from the razor sharp flint edges, and to allow me to apply even downwards pressure onto that uneven hump that I was trying to level.

Just make sure you wear a proper respirator rated for silica dust, and the like. Especially, if you're going to be using the Dremel Tool. Inhaling flint & diamond dust is no good. I wore one even using the flat stone in the tub of water. Can't be too careful.

Thank you, seems I may have a diamond combination sharpener some place, will try that first.

Two Feathers, yes it does, need to make a road trip to Lowe's for other stuff, will look for your recommendation.

Thanks.

I’ve used the green rock wheels that come in the Dremel sets… they work well. I’m not sure what they’re called , other than green rock wheels..🤔
They’re more of a grinding rock than a cut off wheel.. which will work as well.

I thought they were simply called “green wheels “. I discovered grinding wheels in a large kit of Dremel accessories that were green
and ended up using them to grind flints. They work.

I just had this situation.
I'm new at the flintlock thing and the gun I recently bought only came with one. There aren't any places around here to buy one, nor is there the correct rock to be found anywhere around here to make one (NJ shore) - So if i wanted to shoot the gun right away, the crappy flint that came with it was the flint I had to use.

Not knowing any better I flattened the top where there was a big lump with my table top belt sander with 100 grit paper. Worked perfectly

I use Mizzy wheels in my Dremel. Google will tell you where to buy them. A green stone is used on a bench grinder for carbide bits. I have one of those 8" wheels also. It will work better with a variable speed grinder at a slower speed.

You can get a Dremmel 545 Diamond wheel and mandrel at Lowes for about $12.00-$18.00.
Hope this Helps?
God bless:

thank's I picked up on your post, and I headed to Lowes to get one, or two. toot.

A diamond sharpening stone will work well. Put some water on it to clear the cuttings and eliminate dust.

Any wheel run at high speed will create a cloud of dust. No ordinary mask will prevent you from inhaling it. The masks we all have around are useless. You need one that makes a seal on your face to be effective. At very least work outside with a fan on the work.

Tried my ole ladys glass grinder with diamond wheel, makes short work of humps, nice an flat on top, can't try because of red flag here

I use a diamond cut off wheel like used to cut carbide tools, since I have a lot of them that were worn out and discarded where I worked.I use the sides of the wheel which still have some diamond left on them.
