I am looking to buy an elk hide to do some possibles bags. I think Swampy used to use a lot of elk hides on his bags.

Since Swampy doesn't frequent this site anymore, I don't now who to ask.

So I am asking does anyone know where to buy good quality elk hide heavy enough to use to make possible bags from?

All the Elk migrated out of Fl. a long time ago. I have been told it was sometime after the last ice age and things begin to warm up here! :idunno: :rotf:

I've ordered it from Springfield Leather a few time and liked what I got although it is chrome taned also. Give them a call and tell them what it's for and they might have something that suites your needs.

Thanks to all who replied. I should have specified that what I needed was vegetable tanned, or brain tanned elk hide!

As you may or may not know, Chrome tanned is a :nono: when sheath making for knives.
Here is an explanation of the process from Wikepedia!
Chrome-tanned leather, invented in 1858, is tanned using chromium sulfate and other salts of chromium. It is more supple and pliable than vegetable-tanned leather and does not discolor or lose shape as drastically in water as vegetable-tanned. It is also known as wet-blue for its color derived from the chromium. More esoteric colors are possible using chrome tanning.

Its the chemicals and the salts that will cause a knife blade to start to rust, especially if there is any moisture present. Around here that can be just the humidity!
So I feel it would probably cause rust with pretty much any metal object touching it!

Thanks Wick for the link!

I have bought a few hair on elk hides on e- bay to use in the floor of my baker tent and to cover up things like the cooler so its not seen. DECENT PRICES on there.
