Im still looking for a good place to buy a kit from.

Where has everyone else done business at?

Track of the Wolf
Muzzleloaders Builders Supply
Dixie Gun works

??????????????

Im looking for a Lehigh style rifle (or something close to it), with something close to 100% inletted. In a kit form.

Thanks

Pecatonica River has a Lehigh Kit. Follow this link.
PECATONICA RIVER LEHIGH

The price does not include the price of the wood but it does include the stock carving and inlettings.

If you use the link, click on the "STOCK AND PISTOL PRICES" up at the top of the left hand column to see what the price of the wood you want would be.

I have had very good results with Pecatonica Rivers Curly Maple #3 wood.
I believe Pecatonica River supplies TOTW with their stocks.

I'm currently working on a Jim Chambers Virginia rifle and I would estimate it to be 95% inletted. I like the fact that there is 5% left for me to do to get a nice tight fit... a good set of palm chisels, patience, self restraint and some inletting black are all I need (paint it black, drop it in and tap it before shaving off the now black high spots...repeat). The only guns that I know of that are 100% inletted are referred to as being finished "in the white" by builders with the exception of some mass produced weapons. Good luck... You can do it :) !

I agree with Zonie in that I have seen PR's product names inside of stocks ordered through TotW rather than the TotW name.

I like PR and should have included them in my post.

Sorry.

I have ordered stocks from Dick Greensides (owner of PR) for over 10 years.

The Lehigh was the first advanced rifle kit I made and I bought it from him. It's also the only rifle built by me that I ever sold.
Many is the time I wished I had it back. :(

This is my first post on this forum. I've been reading up and getting a lot of good advice over the past couple of weeks.

I purchased a Hawken Flintlock kit from TOW and had an unfavorable experience with them. I'm originally from Minnesota, but now live in Arizona. Before ordering, I visited the store while on vacation to try to get a feel for the quality and service and it's apparent that I misjudged them. There were a number of things that were not disclosed (many parts not in stock which resulted in a seven month wait). There was more to the transaction than this, but I'll spare you the misery. As a result of my experience, I have no intention of future business with them.

YMMV. Good luck with your decision.

Chamber kits for quality parts. As your skill increases, you can go towards more primative kits.

I dont know why it is some people have great luck with TOTW and some dont, when I tryed to ask a few Qs I was just cut off twice and after getting the catalog I E mailed 2 Qs and the answer I got was "buy our catalog" and I was wanting a fullstock Hawken. :shake: Fred :hatsoff:

I have ordered kits from Susie at MLBS and all of those stocks came direct from PR. I have been very happy with PR'S quality of stocks.

This is my first post! A word about TOTW. I am working on a parts set for my first flint rifle project. The project started out as one thing and has evolved into another as these things tend to do. TOTW staff have been a great source of advice and insight. TOTW has been a great resource for high quality pictures with detailed descriptions!

I have always had good service from Track, this is the first time I heard anyone really having a complaint about them. About their kits - I would stay away from their maple stocks. Some runs of Track maple stocks are so soft a fat fly walking across them leaves dents in the wood.

Maurice: Welcome to the Forum! :)

I'm glad to hear you have had such good service from TOTW. Hopefully if you run into any problems you will give our members a chanch to help out too.

The only negatives I've heard about Track is they have, several times sold kits to folks without shipping many of the pieces. This is because the parts were on Back Order.
I don't know if the buyers ordered the kits using the Web or by Mail or by calling. If it was by calling, Track should have told them about the delay they would face. Of course, if it was by Web or Mail, there would be no way short of calling them to let them know about the problem.

In any case, some folks were quite upset when they got a stock blank and a butt plate (or whatever) with a note that said they might have to wait 9 months for the rest of the gun. :(

As I said, WELCOME! Keep us informed about your project. :)

I use to buy from the Track, Then I called Pecatonica River last year and I wont do Business with any one but them, their Prices are under The Track and you can ask to speak with Greg the owner and He will take care of what ever you need In my orenion they can't be Beat I have Built 4 Rifles that I ordered the Parts for through Pecatonica River, and never had any problems with parts not being in stock or back ordered as the track likes to do. :cursing:

"...ask to speak with Greg the owner..."

Has Dick sold Pecatonica River to someone?

For over 10 years, I've been dealing with Dick Greensides who was (is?) the owner.
In fact, about 6 months ago I bought my Tennessee and a Verner from him. He even got me a Rice barrel for the Verner because he was having some problem getting .50 cal swamped barrels from Green Mountain.

Sorry my fault Dick is the owner i was on the Phone with a pumper named greg some times my multi-task gets stuck

I just did , why is it the flintlocks dont have the stock drop that the "newer" rifles have? Seems the thing to do is get something like thee and change over to perc( I mean for me not everyone else :rotf: ) Fred :hatsoff:

Some schools of gun building do have a lot of drop in the stock during flintlock times and some European guns have a lot of drop way back in the 17th century.
