I know I know tons of great local shops, but if you are a few hundred miles away from these areas that have these local shops what do you do? I for one began making them Wads, Caps, Patches, I did have to limit to percussion firearms only Flint is hard to find in my area and black powder non existent (I refuse to pay hazmat fees). When Pyrodex, Triple Seven are readily found.

I'm in the same boat as fsr as shops go. Walmart is my best option for caps. As far as powder, I'm lucky enough to live within driving distance of Friendship so I make sure to stock up when the national shoots are going on. For everything else, I order from online shops like Track of the Wolf, The Gun Works and The Log Cabin Shop. I have had good experiences with all three.

I would think Kentucky would have a pretty good black powder enthusiast following. Follow Muzzleloading Magazine, google online for local clubs/ events.
Many clubs and most events will have a number of vendors who will have powder, etc. Only about two weeks ago, Bass Pro had primers available on line....have them shipped to the store for pick up and you save haz mat and shipping fees...if one is in a reasonable distance.

In Kansas some Walmarts and local gun shops carry minimal black powder supplies. For real black powder your best option is to order powder from on of the reliable venders that ship such as Grafs or Powder Inc. caps are a hit or miss proposition but Cabelas and Bass Pro often have them.

Personally have ordered blackpowder (plus musket caps and some other items we don’t talk about here) from multiple suppliers recently and have NOT paid Hazmat nor more than $5 for shipping. Suggest you sign up for notifications from various suppliers as to when they have deals…. here is a screenshot of my Hazmat notifications for the last few days.

Now I have to admit that the no Hazmat and free or $5 shipping required a minimum of a $100 order or minimum quantity of blackpowder (5 pounds I believe) to be taken advantage of, but using 70 grains as an average charge, 5 pounds of powder is only going cover 350 shots or so, not much in my little world.

If you really want to shoot flintlocks, the ‘I refuse to pay hazmat fees’ excuse is pretty lame, at least in my opinion.

I am like you, I live 100+ miles away of any city big enough to possibly have anything associated with black powder. I cannot drive there and back for what I have to pay for a hazmat/shipping fee. The selection cannot be matched either with what's available on the net. Just my $.02

Depends on whether a local merchant sees enough demand to make it worthwhile. EG Local hardware in Oxford PA built a brick structure on their grounds to store BP in.
