Why I would recommend someone not get into muzzleloading

Yea I was at Cabelas in Allen, TX yesterday and they had lg and sm pistol and sm rifle but no large rifle

Common everyday rifle ammo that used to cost 65 cents per round is a buck and a half to two bucks now.

Then they make rolling your own impossible if you want to save money.

You're right Springer. I probably have enough loaded ammo to last me. Plus i have lots pf powder both black, subs and smokeless. Just going to have to start saving my spent primers and reuse them.
I did play with using them before and was pretty successful. Hardest part was getting the anvil back in but I found a solution for that.

I will say though that I find #11s to be too large for most stock reproduction revolver nipples. They tend to fall off. But, you take what you can get. I'd get some new nipples if I had to shoot #11 caps.

I’ve found #11’s to be the all around cap, I’ve 20 or so revolvers everything from the 1962 Police to the Walker. A slight squeeze on the 11 and it will fit tight enough on most nipples. All my revolvers have the nipples the gun came with.
Not disagreeing but bigger is better than too small and the CCI 10’s only work on the 1862. RWS 1075 are another versatile size.

I bought a cap and ball revolver two months ago and have fired it a total of seven times. As in seven shots. The problem: No available percussion caps. None to be found. Anywhere. Admittedly, there are those online sites where you supposedly can get them with a minimum order of $150 or $200. I have tried making my own caps, watching videos and working tirelessly. The result is hit and miss. Mostly miss. Even those well-meaning video hosts who work out different approaches to DIY caps seem to have limited success and also seem to have a stock of the real stuff to use when they need it. I have not actually seen a commercially produced cap in person--just in the online ads. Sites and stores selling percussion arms should have a sign saying: Don't plan on shooting this weapon. This is not the time to get into muzzleloading. Those already enjoying the sport apparently have a supply of percussion caps available. Those just getting started? Good luck. Hang the gun on the wall. Just don't plan on shooting

I feel your pain. #10's are pretty much non existent where I live, but I can get #11's. I'm new to cap and ball shooting. I ordered a set of Slixshot nipples for my 1851 Navy, and the #11's fit perfectly. There's a will, there's a way. Best of luck in your search.

I do have a stockpile of caps and being that I've been where you are I can sympathize with you but instead of only crying about it I spent hours on the internet sorting out scam sites, making phone calls, driving 50+ miles to local BP shops, and in general keeping on the hunt. Part of the game. You will have to do this for other types of ammo and also for handguns and long guns you may want. Many items are just now starting to come back. Persevere and good luck!

Relative to things 'coming back', modern ammo is flooding the market; a major local shop has (in capital letters) NO LIMIT! And, the prices are way down. We may see much the same in our Caps & Powder, etc.

I don't know anyone in real life who shoots BP, other than my neighbor who hunts with an inline and Pyrodex pellets and has very little interest in BP other than hunting.

I got this Remington 1858 Model at Cabela's a few weeks ago for $319. The nipples were tapered .168 to .162 at the tip end and were a bit loose for #11 caps. I wanted to keep them blued so I got the PIR-LI stock number nipples from Track of The Wolf for #11 caps. They measured .168 to .166 at the tip end. They were a very tight fit with #11s and loaded better after I smoothed the tips with 600 grit sandpaper.

There are ways around the cost. Buy raw lead and make your own ammunition. Drives costs down. Make your own powder. Initial startup cost, but once up and running you'll always have powder, plus again cheaper. Buy patching from fabric stores in bulk. A couple yards of pillow ticking from Walmart is much cheaper than buying those little packs at the gun store. Shoot flintlocks instead. Flints easy to come by plus you get more than one shot from them.

Yes. And shop around. Some vendors have unmentionable ammo at 40-50% less than others. And free shipping!
