 Two of the three I got came off Nature Conservancy land on the SC line here in Transylvania county, they had already cleared with SC and NC WRC folks about getting them out, they tear the place to pieces, rare species of plants seem to be high up on their menu list.
I baited them with sweetfeed, and shot 'em with my 2 BP revolvers, a '58 Rem replica and a Ruger OA, both one-shot kills but one ran aways before giving up the ghost I shot a tad high and missed the heart but drilled both lungs, a sow that weighed est. 300 lbs. Very good eating, one of the hams I cut up into chunks for skewer roasts over charcoal at a get-together and basted with Lawry's, there were kids there and they all gobbled down 1 or 2 skewers, there was not a piece left.

It may go bad before I get a answer up here ,but bagged a good size one this mornning right ay day break crosing the road , the first shot from the rifled 62 underhammer with the Zep barrel from John Taylor made a hell of a hole going thru and it still tryed to take off again but the second shot from from the 53 Hawken ( TOTW 86 Santa Fe ) got the back of the head and droped it. WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE MEAT!! FRED :hatsoff: (I stopped hunting years ago and never did hunt hogs.)

fw,
If you don't have a butcher that can do it,
maybe you could find a farmer to do it for 1/2 the
meat.
Another option is to BBQ the whole pig. Now I
know that you living in Texas can find someone to help . Not much butchering involved and a BBQ
pig makes for some good eating.

If you can get the innards out and hide off, cut off the head. Lay the carcass on a tarp and fill the cavity with ice and wrap it up. It might keep until you can find a processor or cold room. It needs to be hung for couple days before cutting up for freeezing. Or just throw it on the B-B and invite the neighborhood.

Was thinking of that , just hate to see good hog go to waste. This being a long weekend it may be hard to find a butcher Im just trying to figure out ahead of time what to do with them, must of been 10 crossing when I took that shoot, and the lake is just covered in new tracks, my only problem is Im just learnning to walk again after years in a wheelchair so I had kid drop me off about 100 yds from a over look with pic nik tables and clear 40 to 70 yd slight down hill shot, dont know what this will do to the mornning crew drinking here :rotf: but got lots more fresh tracks within 500 yds both sides. Fred :hatsoff:

Thats good eating, hope you can get the problem solved. You can try the ice trick, it should last for a few days, lay it in the shade, or in a basement if you can then cover with blankets or foam of some sort.

fw,
I don't know why I didn't think of this
earlier. There is group..."Sportsmen
Against Hunger" which are available in all 50
states thru your own DNR.

That is a great idea.My local Deer processer supports the program. The Al DNR lists drop sites online.Maybe FW's state also lists online? My family doesn't eat Boar or Venision so I donate every Kill. The meat is not wasted. It is ground into sausage. In Georgia the prisoners in milledgeville process the meat.:winking:

Great idea I thought of something on the same lines it didnt go to waste , this mornning the "herd" was out of range (by about 400 yds) clear across a inlet. Ive never seen them go after salt anyone know about that? I get a ton ofr deer come by to get some most the year here at the house Im wondering if I could do that at the lake bed? Fred :hatsoff:

We donate several hogs each year to Boysville, right outside San Antonio TX. They have arrangements with local meat processors so we only have to pay about $15 for Boysville to get the whole hog.

We have about the same kind of thing here with church set ups north of Tyler. fred :hatsoff:

fw,
nother idea have your DNR contact our DNR and
drop a couple hundred in our Wayne National
Forrest. I don't think a couple hundred would last
very long after a season was set. Only way to hunt them in Ohio is to go to one of the private
game ranches and pay dearly for it :hmm:

You think it would be aright to export some to Iran and Iraq?

They like pigs don’t they?

Your right, I guess I wasn’t thinking.

I would like to find a place that’s not too far away to hunt hogs.
Reading this post has got me wanting to go hunting hogs.
Beside good eating sounds like it could be interesting.

I saw a segment on a hunting show where they trapped a bunch of hogs, like 6 at a time in a cage on wheels they take them live to to a processor, so they can be inspected they said they get 16 dollars a lb for wild boar tenderloin in Europe. I have never eaten boar meat but would like to hunt them someday with my 54 cal.

I'd like to go on a "hog shoot" with a Flintlock where hogs already exist because they are a very bad and growing problem...but IMO, we don't want to bring them into other areas of other states...they breed and expand unchecked...destroy deer and turkey habitat...and there's no natural predator that keeps them in check.

Feral hogs have become a real issue in the southern states...population explosion, range expansion, habitat destruction, etc...they're pests / varmints...the Wildlife Dept's don't even have any say about them because they are not 'game animals' therefore, no jurisdiction or regulations what-so-ever...no seasons, no bag limits, no nothing...like a domestic cat that goes wild then breeds and after a couple years you got herds of feral cats on the loose...wildlife dept is not involved at all.

I'd like to get in with a NC landowner somewhere who has the feral hog problem on his land and go exterminate a few with a Flintlock.

If you have cat problems, you need to let the hawks live, and welcome the coyotes. They will reduce the cat problem very quickly. As for the hogs, people should organize drives and shoot them. If you don't want the meat, arrange with one of the many groups that furnishes meat to those in need. A few drives can reduce the hog population to next to zero, and then a careful hunter or two can finish off the remain by tracking and stalking the survivors.
