Silly newbie question... ...Is there a specific yellow dye that works best? Thank you for sharing your process.
I recommend "Transtint" dye. They also make a water-based yellow dye stain product sold under the "General Finishes" brand. Be careful with the straight dye; it's extremely potent. Learn how to use it before you use it on anything you don't mind trashing.

Hi,
Any water based yellow dye will work. I use simple dry yellow aniline dye from Brownells then mix it in water. With respect to concentration, it really depends on how purplish and cold the black walnut is. More intense yellow is needed if the wood is really like this light gray purplish brown black walnut.
