A friend has a 36 that is almost a smooth bore. We were discussing what he considered his options to be. Since he has a pickup bed load of 36 cal balls already cast, it is his intent to replace the barrel.
The conversation did get around to freshing the barrel but we had no idea of who or how much.
Anyone know where this is still being practiced?

I am told this guy can do it. Bob Hoyt # 717-642-6696

Looks like he will have something to do this winter, recast a .36 cal ball into a .38 or .40 ball after refreshing the bore.

Thanks BirdDog6. I'll pass along the number, information and your suggestion of winter activities.

Oh, and by-the-way, the offer for the coffee is good anytime you'd care to collect.

Ed Rayl reamed out a .58 and rerifled it into a .62 with a coned muzzle and deep round bottom rifling.

What type of barrel is this? How many shots have been put thru
this gun? Just wondering. Anyhow, I would definately freshen it
before replacing.

I don't know what make of barrel we are discussing but there have been literally tons of lead shot out of it. His having a pick-up bed full of .36's already cast is not much of an exaggeration. He's a competitive shooter and has been doing so for years and most of it was done with this rifle.

Having given this some thought, I've decided to encourage him to rebarrel. That'll mean that there is a barrel floating around the neighborhood that might could be had for cheap!

This won't be much help but may be interesting.

The journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition Vol. 7 p. 92 Apr. 7th 1806 W. Clark "We made our men exersize themselves shooting and regulateing their guns, found Several of them had their sights moved by accident, and others wanted some little alterations all which were compleated rectified in the course of the day except my small rifle, which I found wanted cutting out" A footnote states: Apparently Clark's small bore Kentucky hunting rifle had worn down and needed reboring.

A later passage. p.95 Apr. 8th 1806 W. Clark "John Shields cut out my Small rifle & bought hir to Shoot very well. the party ows much to this man , by whome thier guns are repared when they get out of order which is very often."

Anyway, seems there is hope for the barrel if you can find a competent gunsmith, good luck!

You mite get a bore light and check it out good, quite often the rifling is washed off at the muzzle from loading and cleaning. I have fixed several by just cutting a inch or so off the muzzle.
