I prefer the cavalry flap holsters, the standard one's with a little more flap than Phil's has on it. One I have is just a $20 replica, nothing wrong with it though. A million years ago, I went to a saddle maker to have one made, and he comes out of the back room with an original cavalry flap hostler, and then duplicated it for me in latigo/ladigo (sp?) leather, which is a thick, but soft leather. It's the best holster I've ever had, ever. !! Those two holsters will fit all my six-guns, just about, and I've gone to the 6" (give or take half an inch) barrel length for most all my six guns, so yeah on size fits all. Several of my modern side arms fit perfectly in one, the other, or both of those holsters, including my (dare I say it?) Webly. And obviously my cartridge Colts, which sport 5.5" barrels. And some others, I will not mention them. But they kind of rhyme with "booger".

I do use a "slim Jim" for my 1860 Colt, for around the property when doing chores. Got it on right now.

If anyone is interested in holsters of the time period that applies to this forum, the "California", also called the "Slim Jim" was about the only kind of open top holster that was used. As was mentioned, the full flap military holster was also popular.

I have two Calif. Slim Jims, nothing fancy. As a matter of fact, use both of them today with my Colt 1862 Police and my 1849 Pocket.

That looks good .At one time I wanted to do leather work .Just never got into it .I got one holster started from a kit by Tandy Leather .Never finished it .Holding my Blackhawk right now .Would fit a ROA if I could find one cheap enough .

This first one is for belt carry.

This one is for use when carrying a pack.

I don't use either very much.

I'm pretty sure this holster isn't even close to historically accurate, but I'm Mexican on my father's side so couldn't resist something with that south of the boarder flavor to match the engraved 1851 Navy I got a good deal on recently. Any ideas if something like this style of holster actually did exist? If so, where and when? Or is it more modern?

Looks good, but you need some silver and conches on the holster and belt. I grew up with a lot of Mexican Cowboys and they always had silver and conches on their saddles , bridle, and gun rigs. I used to tease them about having a little crow in them and they would give it right back and say what does a dairy farmer know about looking cool. Good people.
