I enjoy shooting the originals when I can. 1864 US Springfield, P53 Tower Enfield, 1836 US Johnson pistol. Still hunting for a shootable 1795 US Springfield and an 1855 US Springfield
That is what I do when shooting this rifle. I place a 1/4" felt wad over the powder, then the patched .345 ball.I have heard of folks using a wad or some inert filler such as cornmeal to move a ball farther away from a pitted breach area to improve accuracy with no ill effects.
