Do you shoot old "Originals"?

I enjoy shooting the originals when I can. 1864 US Springfield, P53 Tower Enfield, 1836 US Johnson pistol. Still hunting for a shootable 1795 US Springfield and an 1855 US Springfield

I have heard of folks using a wad or some inert filler such as cornmeal to move a ball farther away from a pitted breach area to improve accuracy with no ill effects.

That is what I do when shooting this rifle. I place a 1/4" felt wad over the powder, then the patched .345 ball.

1840's Henry Cooper halfstock in .36. The bore was pitted and oversized and was relined by Bobby Hoyt.

60 years ago, all we had were originals in our house. That was what we had. Still have a couple of those (shotguns) I hunt with on occasion. The original rifles are fun to shoot but not accurate enough to hunt with. It's all fun.

Yes, I small game hunt with several SxS English 12ga.'s and also have a 13ga and 15ga. as well. Shot NSS-A competition for years with a 2 band 1861 Springfield contracted by Savage.

Yes, I’ve shot original 1777’s, 1816 and 3rd model Bess’s.

The bottom 2. The middle rifle is a .51 that shoots as good as I can, the bottom is a .49 smooth bore. Both are in great shape for their age.

Yes! A Harpers Ferry 1816 conversion musket, of 1842, and a trapdoor carbine that was rebuilt in 1882, and again for the Spanish-American War.

.577cal 1858 Pritchett Volunteer Short Rifle, made by Robert Taylor Pritchett -

Eight shots at 50m offhand - 585gr smooth-sided bullet with knurling over 70gr of 2Fg - quite lively.....

Problem is, over here in UK, although anybody can buy an original, it's a whole new ballgame if you want to shoot it. This old beauty has to be classed in exactly the same way as any modern cartridge-firing firearm. It has to be locked away, just like any other modern firearm.

Original 1816 Springfield. Re-converted to flintlock. Original barrel was in .71+ caliber. (Probably shot out). New steel Hoyt liner now back to original .69 caliber. Ramrod is new replacement. Sort of like a new, original. LOL
