Time to take the whole forestock from 2x4 form to " rough in " shape ...finally ! Been fighting me, esp. today.... coffee break first ... My stock duplicator is doing a good job ! Got one side " in the rough " ....won't quit this evening until both sides of forestock are in the rough ....so the whole gun will be in that state ...will be great ! Back at it ... P.S. ...its all in the " Roughed in " shape now ! Finally !! GEESH !! ... Very cool !! Sheew !! Tomorrow ,

I did some more work on the Kibler Fowler today. I filed the casting sprues off the butt plate, then polished the butt plate, taking out some casting marks. I razor-sawed the casting sprue on the entry pipe, and fitted the trigger plate (which necessitated some minor wood cutting). Additionally, I test fit the lock (it was fine and tight). I had to do some minor filing to the thumb plate after I saw where it was hanging up and then it fit just fine. I think the next things I will tackle are pinning the trigger and working to fit the barrel on. The barrel was not fitting in all the way at the breech. I think there will have to be some shaving/sanding of some wood there before it sets down in. After that, the ramrod and working on the finish of the wood.

I rubbed a drop of alcohol on the butt and the wood showed nice and dark, which is the way I want it to be when finished. Little by little, it is coming along. I don't get to doing things on it each day. Right now I am resting my hands from the back and forth of filing, sawing and polishing. Feels like I have been drinking many cups of coffee from working my hands like that.

My excuse? I am a lawyer. When have I done REAL manual labor? 🤪

The Doc is out now.

today i continued with my effort to turn a $400.00 piece of exquisitely figured maple into $2.00 worth of firewood.
somehow wandered 1/4 inch in the first 6 inches of the RR channel. trying to decide if i want to splice a filler in or cut it back. cut back i would have to pour a 5 inch pewter nose piece.
the barrel is a 42 inch swamped Colrane. limits my choices.
maybe i will just go back to bed.

I'm thinking the same. I guessed maple looking at the other side but this other side looks like you suggest.
whatever it be, looks good without the paint.
mostly i can't nail down what wood is without smelling it. my father had sawmills before i was born and i can't remember when he didn't have one until he passed. I get chills smelling a fresh cut board.
last mill he had we milled a black walnut. he has been gone 30 years and i still have some of that walnut.
