2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

Well fellas, I’ve been hunting a lot lately. The weather has been great in the mornings ( to warm as of late in the afternoons).

This morning I hunted a new area up the road from home. This is the second time I’ve been in there. I didn’t see a whole lot but I got the three I shot at.

Then drove on up the road a piece and tried a spot I’ve never hunted. I saw a few but nothing close enough. I’m going in there again tomorrow. I want to try it early.

On Sunday I worked on my front sight. I wasn’t happy with the yellow fiber optic I put in it. So I redid it with a piece of red and didn’t fold the metal over it restricting the ability to gather light. What a difference. I can see that sight WAY earlier than before. Quite the game changer.

Now the only thing left to do is cone the barrel. I got a tool from Joe Woods. Just have to do it.

I hope you can get the ideas of what I did with the front blade from these pictures. I groove was dremeled in and epoxy put in the groove and the fiber optic laid in the groove. Also I touched the end of it to a soldering iron to make it bigger.

I have all accessories together except for the brass ramrod. That is on the way but I can certainly get started without it now that I have the replacement TOTW nipple installed. Thanks to all of you for the advice on kitting. For now I’m using a modern possibles bag I have laying around.

I also have two powder horns in various states of completion that my son and I are doing as a winter project. The smaller, flat horn will go with the Crockett and the large with the deer rifles.

My in laws and thier young boys. They are unfortunately not being raised the way my kids were, and I would not let any of them within 20 feet of a firearm…..

Your caution is advisable for sure.

I don't have any newbies anymore. They are all trained up and learned well. When I did work with them it was one at a time and I pretty much didn't do any shooting myself except for demonstration.

Squirrel report from Kentucky.

Sitting at my dining room table having my morning coffee. Looking down the hill in my small woods I’m seeing several squirrels at this time running tree to tree, up, down and over to nearby trees. It appears as if most of the nut crops have either been eaten or have fallen from the trees. The leaves are just starting to change to orangish colors here.

With this in mind, it appears as if the squirrels are starting to work more diligently at finding food. In doing so, I have been noticing them gnawing more and more small branches off trying to get to the last of what few nuts remain in the tops of the trees. My guess is squirrel stupid season is very near. Perhaps another couple of weeks or so.

I’ve been busy with deer hunting lately. Scouting, setting ladder stands, hunted the early ML season last weekend and had to take care of the deer I got. So, that hasn’t left any time for my beloved squirrel hunting. Vision appears to be slowly improving so I’m hoping to be able to go squirrel hunting tomorrow. Still more bow hunting to do before orange army crazy season as well. Really need at least one more deer in the freezer.

Starting to get a little ornery so I figure I best get out there and try to squirrel hunt as much as I can now.

Very nice Boomerang. You can’t beat a fox squirrel for pretty. I have a friend that goes out to Indiana for archery season. He has relatives that have farms. He sends me fox squirrel pictures. He invited me to go out and hunt squirrels. It’s tempting. Lol

What rifle is that boomerang? Mighty fine looking.

It’s a Lyman GPR .54 cal loaded down to 35gr 3f.

Have any of you experimented with different percussion caps or have a preference for a certain one?

I have three choices on hand. I’ve never really noticed a difference between them shooting larger caliber rifles, so unless I hear differently I will assume the same with the Crockett.

I currently have:

CCI #11
CCI #11 Magnum
RWS 1045 + (magnum)

I live up here in anti gun land, so when it comes to percussion caps I always have a patchwork of what I can get my hands on.

I use mostly RWS 1075 and cci #11, they both shoot the same in my .32

CCI#11, and Remington #11 are the only 2 I've used in any of my 32's. Like Duk, I didn't notice any difference. I shoot more CCI, because that's what I have the most of. Looking forward to your range report Scott!
